FJ1100 84 carb pipe routing

Good day from sunny south africa ,I have an 84 FJ1100 ,bike starts if after market fuel tap is closed but dies when tap is opened to allow fuel through,bike has been standing for a while and i am not sure if the fuel pipes have been correctly placed please help.

Welcome Walter, we are gonna need some more information to help you solve your problem. With the little you provided it might be the floats or float valves being stuck open. When stuck open the open tap floods the bowls. When the tap is closed the fuel gets consumed and the level is corrected. What is the history of the bike? Are you the new owner? Can you post a few pictures of what you think might be wrong with the routing of the tubes? Did you check that fuel flows when the tap is in the "Open" position and not backwards?
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Welcome to the forum. I can't help to much because my bike (1990 FJ) has a different system but with more information I am sure that FJmonkey and others will be able to help you. You are at the right place. How long have you had your FJ ?  :morning1:

Hello Walter, I moved your post over from the "introduction"section to the "running problems" section for more exposure.
When the FJ sits "for awhile" the carbs dry out and floats in the fuel bowls drop down, as the fuel evaporates. Also as the fuel evaporates the pilot jets and main jet nozzles get plugged.
It sounds to me as you describe your problem, you are turning on the fuel petcock, filling the float bowls then turning off the petcock and the bike starts and runs...when you leave the petcock open the bike dies.

I think your floats are stuck open and when you turn (back) on the petcock, the carbs are flooding.
Pull your spark plugs and take a smell.

Time for a good carb cleaning. Half measures will avail you nothing...do the job correctly. Read the Files.

I hope you post a new introduction with some info about you, and not so much the problem with your bike.

I had some problems with the fuel pipe routing, here is a pic of what I think Yamaha says the routing should be.


I had some difficulty with it, so I came up with my own version, just had to buy a "T" piece and new pipe.





The length of the pipe has to be JUST right, too short and it will pop off the fuel tap, too long and it will bunch up and pinch.

As a tip, the little elbow pipe coming out of the petrol tank fuel tap connecting to the fuel hose to the carburetor bank has a habit of falling out if it is old, allowing the fuel tank to empty all over your engine.

A simple and effective fix is to use wire to loop around the elbow and fuel tap.
