Rust & pits on RH handlebar

So after a little weekend cable maintenance I figured out why my twist throttle still wasn't returning like it should. So I got the rust off ok, but as you can see now there's some pretty deep pits that's leaving a fairly rough surface still.

Is there a way to sand/grind down the pits without ruining the integrity of the handlebar? Steel wool? Dremmel? Emery cloth?

Trust me, the fork situation IS in the works.  Sooner than later, I promise!   

Ok, I won't tell if you won't!  So keeping the handlebar dry won't be a problem, but just wanted to do everthing now & make sure it works while it's apart. Thanks Mr. Monkey!

With the rust cleaned off, that amount of pitting doesn't matter. I'd just give it a very light rub with some fine grit wet & dry to make sure the surface is smooth and put it back together and move onto the next job.

yeah agree with the majority , Mine are exactly the same under the grips . I cleaned mine up with some fine grit sandpaper on my air grinder (not as drastic as it sounds ) gave it a clean up with some WD40 and put them back together and forgot about them.

Got it... off to hardware store tomorrow. Wasn't sure if the pitting would make a difference in the throttle return.

i would recommend using some rust neutralizer to keep that rust from coming right back.

naval jelly makes a brush on type neutralizer also.
