Black box in the tail section

The computer encased in rubber in the tail section of ABS models, just in front of the brake light assembly, is it just for ABS, or does it do any thing else?

Given that I have done away with the ABS can I remove it with out fear of affecting anything else??

Damn it Hein!!! You answered two opposite questions with a yes... (side effects of having an Orange FJ) I am guessing that the black box is exclusive to the ABS as my 86 does not have one.
