if your fj has anti -dive forks you are more like a 87 ,so it would be 41 teeth.

Mark is correct.... stock with the anti dive 1200s was 17/41

17/40 should be right on a 3CV.  Also was the best gearing that I used at the track with mine, though that was with the YZF wheel; equal to 17/41 on stock tires.

Thanks. I was looking at Randy's RPM parts website and it seems my only options are 39, 40, and 42 teeth. I wonder if I should just go with a 42, but keeping in mind the nearly 6-hour ride to the track.

The 40 was decidedly faster for me than a 42 (41 vs 43 if you correct for the tire).  If you're not replacing the chain, go with the 40, which will give you more wheelbase and make it easier to launch hard.

I hope you ordered the steel one and not aluminum.  the fj turns those to cheese.

I got enough miles out of a aluminum rear sprocket to go through a good set of Dunlops -- but that also included just over 100 drag strip runs. Used aluminum since it was the only thing readily available for the PM Chicane rims.
