Accessory Power Port

Hello everyone. I'm trying to wire in a power jack but I don't want to run it directly to the battery. Is there an empty port some place I can plug into? Something I can tap power off of? What I really want is for this port to shut down when the key is off. I know I can put in in line fuse in and just run it straight to the battery but I want it to turn off with the key. It would also be nice if this port can carry a lot of power. Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure as I'm not familiar with the wiring on this bike yet, but on my XJ, and as is pretty standard (correct me if I'm wrong someone), power should go from the battery, to a starter solenoid, to the main fuse, to the key, and then from the key to the rest of the fuses (and so on).

Why not wire it in directly after the key? If you're not afraid of splicing your wires, no problem--but the cleanest fix would probably take advantage of the key unit "plug" into the harness, and put your connection between those.

I'm not even close to an electronics expert, but that should be as high power as you can get without going straight from the battery, and will definitely turn off with the key.

On the XJ, these wires are located in the headlight bucket; I'm sure that's different on the FJ, given it has a fairing, so you'll need to ask someone else. But if you take the fairing off, you should be able to just follow the wire from the key yourself. A quick check with a multimeter should show you where voltage is going on and where it only comes out after the key has been turned. Then just rig up something pretty to fit between--or, like I said, if you aren't afraid of permanent mods on the harness, splice in. Make sure to seal it up well, though, don't want to introduce a spot for corrosion into their or your bike might not start up one day...

Not everyone understands what a completely rational process this maintenance of a motorcycle is. They think it's some kind of a knack or some kind of affinity for machines in operation. They are right, but the knack is almost purely a process of reason.

You need to install your own relay-controlled power circuit.  Use that green connector wire to activate the relay only when the ignition key is on.

You can use the correct gauge wire and protection fuse for whatever amount of current you want to draw.

+1    the FJ wiring harness is marginal at best (small wires that are old).... if you plan to run something like electric clothing or any other high amp drawing item you will definitely want to wire it up yourself to suit the required load.

Awesome! I like the plan for the green connector and the relay! Thanks! I have a couple more questions. Where exactly is this green connector? Under the left side of what? What does it look like? And, what kind of relay should I use and where can I get it? I've used relays many times but they were always for some specific job. Now I want a relay that can carry a lot of power for #1) A heated vest, #2) an accessory port (ipod or whatever), #3) my power sucking horns, and #4) whatever the future holds. So I need a relay that can carry a lot of load. Thanks again!

David,
If you're going to want all that stuff, look up a Power Distribution Block from Electrical Connection (Google Electrical Connection).

I installed their power distribution device on my '85 a few years ago.  The device hooks up to the battery and is relay-controlled.  It even provides an SAE battery charger connector (think Battery Tender connector) that works off the unpowered lead of the relay.  IOW, when the key is off you can hoop up a battery charger.  When the key turns on, it activates the distribution relay and automatically "disconnects" the charger (of course, you have to physically disconnect the leads).

I mounted it under the right sidecover where there was extra room after removing the shock remote adjuster.  In this location, I was able to steal a key-switched rear taillight connector it activate the relay.

I'm running my headlight relays, Dyna Ignition, and rear taillight (the one that I used) off this distribution panel, and there's plenty of room for additional circuits.  Check it out and make sure the maximum current rating will fit your needs.

Thanks again for the info everyone. I went under the left side panel and didn't find an orphaned green connector. I found a connector with three wires (a couple of them green) but it was filled with a wire that continues on to the tank.

I hope this pictures comes through! Here is what I saw under my left side cover. I use Unipod air filters and there is a black strap holding a tool kit to the front of the battery.

Thanks again for any help!

I want that power block!

If I recall correctly, my 'spare' connector was under the right side cover.  I used it to power a power point relay as well.

David Allaband

I couldn't find a spare connector under the right side either.
