Need a new drive chain.....

Robert, I am sorry if I offended you.  :sorry: The few here that have met me and interacted with me know that I do not offend by intent. This would have gone much differently if we had been around a campfire at a rally (or the pool at a WCR). Some things just don't carry very well over text.

Now.... Back chains and oil and FJ's.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

I am happy to have any misunderstanding cleared up. Like I said, in person this would have never have gone down the way it did. I tend to get comfortable in dealing with the majority here that enjoy giving and taking their fair of shit. It is part of the fun we have. I look forward to meeting you at any FJ rally. I take it that you accepted my apologies, then all is well and we are now on the right path of Kookaloo enjoyment....

What Pat said, DID 530ZVMX or EK 530ZZZ, they will last if you tend to them and keep them lubed and clean.... A good chain is not expensive, it is good value.....

I think you have already been told the best to get from Pat Conlon.
He has suggested several things that have helped me to great extent.
I have found to put my trust in our membership for their combined experience.
I was a tough sell at first, just ask anyone that remembers my hesitance to upgrading to the blue dot calipers!

My FJ has grown well beyond it's original state and ALL for the better.
My very latest part I bought for it was a new chain, and it was the  DID 530ZVMX , as already suggested.
I didn't second guess the reasons why, I just knew that this was the chain to get from pass experience of other FJ owners here.
Sure, they are not cheap, but do a little shopping around online to find the best price you can.

So....
I went and ordered the DID ZVM-X, as well as an 18 tooth front from Randy. I'm curious to see if I can put up with the loss of Kookaloo riding around the city, but I'm also looking forward to drop in revs on the highway. Most of my riding is 4th and 5th gear stuff in the twisties so I should be happy. If not, I have a new 17 tooth hanging on the wall if the 18 doesn't work out.
Looking forward to it.

You should be very happy with the 18 tooth.
The cruise RPM is like getting an overdrive, and the performance isn't lost either.
The big FJ overcomes the higher gearing without breaking a sweat.

+1 for the EK ZZZ chain.  Just finished a 17,286 mile trip...26 states and cross-Canada east-to-west.  Tossed the POS $80 DID chain at the 6,000 mile mark after adjusting it EVERY night at camp.  :dash2:  Installed the new EK ZZZ chain as suggested by many on here and logged another 11,000+ miles in the next four weeks.  I shot it with a bit of chain saver at the end of each day and only had to adjust it ONCE fo the rest of the trip!  :yahoo:

Friend of mine just replaced his GSXR750 with a new one because he didn't feel like changing the engine case.  Had a big hole in it right in front of the countershaft sprocket.  (The bike was old and worn out and needed replacing at that point)

CHEAP chains are EXPENSIVE.  GOOD chains are CHEAP.

There are a couple of good points to be made here.  Around 10 years ago, I had no place/time to work on my FJ so I had the local Yamaha dealer service the bike.  I had them change the oil, fuel/air/oil filters, sync the carbs, new tires and replace the chain and sprockets.  The bill came to a little over $700.  Oh, well...at least it was "done right" by the dealer.  A few months later I bought a house and parked the bike for seven years (life has a way of interfering with riding sometimes)...Now with a place to work on it, I spent the last three years doing a complete frame-up rebuild...at least I didn't need to buy a chain and sprockets as they were "new" (ahhh...maybe...500 miles on them).  I finished the rebuild and pulled out of the driveway for a three-month trip.  That chain was brutal to deal with...I replaced it on the road in South Carolina with an EK ZZZ chain and researched the old DID model number when I finally got home.  It turned out to be a $50 non-o-ring 530 chain for "up to 400cc dirt bikes" that the dealer (over) charged me $80 for.

Lessons learned:

1) Don't ever figure the dealer "must know what he's doing."
2) Do some research on each and every part/process that goes into your bike.
3) Replacing a crappy chain on the road is not as much fun as riding that day because you bought a decent chain.
4) For the three hours of #3 above, I would have paid $500 for the ZZZ chain.
5) NO ONE cares as much about your ride as you do.
6) The hospitality out there on the road for garage space, tools loaned, beers offered is heart-warming. :drinks:
