Hello fellow Fj'ers. :hi:

I have just re-registered my 86 fj in Sydney Australia and am not happy about the seemingly exorbitant and ever increasing cost (it has doubled in the last 5 years  :ireful: ) ,and got to wondering what fellow Fj'ers have to pay around the world for the privilege of riding their beloved Fj on the street.
First there is the safety inspection $30 (mechanic kicks the tyres, checks everything works),then the compulsory third party insurance or "green slip" $938 ( covers injury to others you injure in the case of an accident),then there is the Roads and Traffic Authority registration fee of $114,then if you want to comprehensively insure the bike ( damage to your bike and other property) with a write off value of $5000.00 another $834.That's a total of $1916 Aussie dollars,or $1959.26USD or 1231.79GBP or $1940.51 CAD.

Am I getting ripped off?  :scratch_one-s_head:

Cheers  :drinks:

Man are you ever getting hosed. My insurance costs me 225CAD a year and we don' have to have an inspection. I have a collector plate on my bike which gives me a discounted rate for my insuance.

Hey mate, sounds like you should leave her safe and sound in QLD. (I got some roads that will keep the battery charged while ya at work)

My 93`s each  ---- Compulsory third party Insurance (CTP) is $262.80 (for 12 months) Registration fee $98.70, Traffic Improvement fee(?) $49.50 total $462.95. Comprehensive Insurance for $5000.00 (agreed value) is $202.13 from "Insure my ride" (Ph 132453) (65%no Claim bonus - cause I`m a good boy) - and if anyone else drops it they only pay an excess of $400 (over the age of 25) as long as i put their name on the policy which takes 2 minutes via phone -otherwise $800)
Note also the above costs include pillion Insurance. (Even cheaper for solo rego) Note: In QLD We don`t need a mechanic check annually - only when ya sell, it is compulsory prior to offering for sale and payable by the vendor.

My FJ rego cost in January this year:
$38.30 rego, 382.00 TAC charge (inc "$50 safety levy"), $38.20 insurance duty.  Total $458.50
No annual roadworthy inspection here in VIC, only at time of sale.

My Cagiva Navigator 1000 cost a total of $401.70  (Safety levy only on 1st bike)

My Aprilia Shiver 750 will cost $413.90 next month  (Safety levy only on 1st bike)

Prices have gone up, of course :-(

I think you'd find agreement on the shooting of politicians just about everywhere.

Of all the vehicles I've owned over the years, I've never known one of them to take itself for a drive and I can only drive / ride one at a time.

Compulsory3rd Party Insurance (the major expense) should be on your licence, not on the vehicle.

Meanwhile, in NZ...

Just registered the bike last weekend. Yearly rego here for bikes is engine capacity based, 3 categories,
1. 250cc and under
2. 250cc - 600cc
3. 600cc plus

I don't know about the others other than that they are cheaper  but my FJ costs me $528.63 a year. This is based upon the fact that as we have government sponsored accident insurance/healthcare, they have "worked out" by some form of bureaucratic logic that the bigger the bike the bigger the accident.
Anyhooo.. The ACC levy (said healthcare scheme) makes up the majority of that.

Apart from that i pay around $30 every 6 months for a Warrent of Fitness (WOF) - which is quite comprehensive. The old government run testing stations VTNZ (Vehicle Testing NZ) which actually has been privatised are notoriously tough, even has it's own meme

By comparison cars are not rated based on capacity, my 2003 Holden Commodore stationwagon - which has a Buick based 3800cc V6 is around $327 I think for a years rego, WOF's at around $50. New cars under 3 years get WOF's that last a full 12 months.

Full comprehensive insurance - by no means compulsory here in NZ - costs me $300 for the bike, $500 for the car.

But on the plus side, if I run over a sheep and get fucked up, not only do I get free medical attention, no questions asked but the farmer cannot sue me for any damages. Add that to that fact that I live here...

God I love this country.

Happy riding!

Registration:                                                      $18/ year
Inspection:                                                      ~$30 / year
Insurance (collision & comprehensive):                 $486 / year

Town/State Reg. fee is around $40. Safety inspection is $25. Liability insurance is around $75/year. I don't have collision (repair/replace my bike / my fault), but it would only be another $50 or so a year. But then again our national dept is $100 gazillion....

wondering what fellow Fj'ers have to pay around the world for the privilege of riding their beloved Fj on the street.

Here in the UK we need an MOT (Book bike into garage and they do all sorts of safety checks, tests and see everything is sound and fit for riding on the road, I suppose it's the equivilent of the safety test-kicky tyre thing over where you are)

Then, once through the MOT "safety test", we need to apply for a road tax disc (again, self explanatory, and is basically a round bit of paper stating that you have paid your vehicle tax dues to ride on the roads.  (you can buy 6 months tax, or 12 months)

Then, finally, we need insurance.  Be it 3rd party only, 3rd party with fire and theft, or fully comprehensive (which covers everything).

The most common one here to buy is 3rd party with fire and theft attached.

So......

Cost of UK MOT for FJ1200 - £26.75 GBP
Cost Of Road Tax for 1200cc bike: 12 Months @ £76.00 (or £41.80 6 months*)
Cost of MY insurance* (42 years old, no claims or convictions, clean licence, locked with approved chain and occasionally garaged: £67.07 GBP for the year, 3rd party with fire and theft.

TOTAL for me: £169.82 GBP - which equates to $262.94 Australian dollars or $270.62 American dollars

* - everyones insurance is different due to different postal code areas, previous convictions, amount of experience riding, where bike is kept etc...
* - You can have the choice of taxing bike for 6 or 12 months (some folk take the bike off the road in winter and store it till spring, so only buy tax for the summer months)

To put this into perspective for me, the whole cost of Insurance, MOT and road tax is about the same as a good brand rear tyre for my bike (a rear tyre for me is approx £140 GBP)

I feel sorry for those who get stung for emmisions tests, and govt hiked up costs in other countries.

Mind you, it may be cheap to get a bike on the road in the Uk, but the hammering we get with fuel costs is unreal (that's fuel for all vehichles).

Ribbert,

I agree completely with you, and that was the case when I was living in MI in US.
The argument I've  heard against this sensible, logical, and reasonable choice is that you can allow another person to use one of the other vehicles you own.

I think that's a red herring, and that it would be easily covered by requiring the CTP insurance to be held by every driver for every category of vehicle they are licensed for.
