how many out there are like me only interested these days in mods that help the function / performance of the FJ and don't really care what the bike looks like as long as it's sorta neat and tidy.

I have made sure ally my panels, plastics and fairing are in good condition but some of the colours don't really match, I did this with the intention of a full respray some 10 years back but now I really don't care.

I have kleptomania,
but when it gets bad,
I take something for it.

me, she is for function not looks , ten yard bike for sure , I've painted everything in epoxy enamel that would of needed a lot of polishing , no bad corrosion , I just hate polishing , now if someone wanted to polish the alloy , I don't mind stripping the paint off :yahoo:
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots

Why not have both?

A quick look at Pat Conlons, Frank Moores, or Frank Burkeens FJs will show you that it can be done in good taste and high quality in regards to the looks, but they are also built to run!
I'm sure there are others that fit this catagory, but these 3 are the ones I think of when the topic comes up.
But when it comes right down to it, we all love our FJs in our own special way, and that's all that really matters!

I personally think form follows function is the overarching rule, but form is important as well.  I feel bad when my machine, no matter how nicely it does its job, looks like I don't care about it.  This feeling guilts me into making sure form communicates function (looks as good as it rides).  This is an expensive affliction...

PS - I routinely ride with the guy that bought my beautiful '90 FJ...  he's dropped it a few times, fairing is cracked badly, windscreen in pieces, dust/dirt/grease/crap layer of 1/8" everywhere on bike.  He rides as fast as I do and smiles at least as much, so to each his own.  In other words, ABSOLUTELY NO JUDGEMENT included in this post.

Good point on perspective Frank. I very much want my bike to look as good as show room condition but I do not have the funds or personal time to make it so. So I am split on making function the first priority, and form second as well as I can. I like to ride it more than show it, if you think it looks like crap then, stop looking, start the engine and enjoy the ride....
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

I'm trying to get function as high as I can right now. This winter I will work on form.

I try to balance this, if making a change it should look as good as it works. If it was done by the factory that should be the minimum acceptable standard. Many times we can do better, form and function.
