How the *!@#%* does one keep that o ring on the oil filter housing?

Is there some trick beyond gasket adhesive? Am changing the oil for the first time obviously. Had I known what a beeotch this was going to be just trying to keep that big black o ring in place while maneuvering the cover back in place, I would have waited til the end of the season.

a little bit of grease on the o-ring should help hold it still long enough to mount the cover

That problem went away when I switched to the RPM spin on filter adapter. Now my filter also has the anti-drain back feature.

A little dab of Vasoline coating the 'O' ring will help keep it in place. The spin on adaptor mod is the way to go. By far the cheapest and easiest mod for the FJ.

+1.  It simplifies the filter changing, big time.  After a few oil changes with that filter housing, that RPM spin on adapter looks pretty good, and is as good as it looks!!

Thanks for the link but I have 2 filters left so will be liberal with the oil changes through this and next season. Ended up lightly dabbing black RTV Gasket Maker along the outer edge of the channel just to give it some tack. Held nicely. At least it is something that is made for this purpose. Done. Ran bike. No leaks. All good. Damn 2 hr oil change though.

it's probably been 8 years since i had a oem oil filter housing, but i still remember this little nugget to pass on:  don't touch that phillips head oil drain screw.  it will strip out.

MACHV glad you got back together ok. I am in the same boat you are, use up the filters I have then the spin on upgrade.

Couple dabs of permatex always did the trick.
