Whilst on my never ending search for you beaut bit's for the fj I came across this new exhaust on ebay...

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yamaha-FJ1100-FJ1200-FJ-1100-1200-exhaust-4into1-header-muffler-silencer-X-PIPE-/251096784950?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a7688e036

which boasts bold claims......

Not being an internal combustion expert I wondered what the the fj forum collective thought about this "Acoustic Supercharging Technology".Your thoughts gentlemen?

Cheers :drinks:

Im no engineer, but my dad is a prototype test engineer for ford motor company in the UK and specialises is engine mapping and dyno testing  :gamer: (quite often to destruction) everything from tiny little 900cc car engines to high performance formula 1 engines.

So i asked him for his thoughts.  His response.... never trust anyone that just quotes percentages! get a look at the dyno run test curves, that will be where the truth is told!  He thinks that at its most basic level it looks like a chopped off exhaust sytem which will always produce less back pressure and as such increase gas through put giving increased power returns.  But he did point out that the extreme nature of this one will undoubtedly be so loud that if the neighbours having taken to it with a sledge hammer after the first ride out, any power gains will be massivly sacrificed by the fact that the boys in blue will pull you over and do you for construction and misuse regulations and fine you at best or seize the vehicle at worst!!

On a more simplified note, he did highlight the fact that ford, honda, opel, chrysler and everyone else in the world is constantly trying to gain more power, more efficiently and if they thought for one minute there was any benefit in this type of 'WW2 based technology' (a quote from their website) dont you think they would all be using it!!

As said before these are my father's thoughts not mine, but he did say with out a proper appraisal/assessment its hard to tell how it will function in the real world, oh but he did promise it will be louder than sticking your head in a jet engine at full throttle!! :wacko3:
A life has been well lived, if you have planted trees under who's shade you do not expect to sit.

I'm told I'm cynical, pessimistic and generally miserable. I say that I'm realistic! The fact that reality sucks is not my fault!

this is soooooo true, when my department managers give me their weekly reports and they are behind on their numbers they give percentages when they are hitting their numbers they give numbers.

As soon as I hear the word percentage I start to give them grief  :bomb:

Accoustic tuning is arguably scavenging.  You know, like every exhaust uses.

If you don't see pro-level racers using it, there's most likely a reason why.  :)

moonrunnah

i agree you cant throw numbers around like that this person should post real (i do mean real) dyno sheets and what you need for jets and intake, just throwing on a pipe wont do shit  :good2:

+1 on that if racers dont do it (who spend lots of money finding the most powerful way) then its probably not worth $500 +

it might sound real nice and have some gain, but not f1 kind of power

then again i dont know much about accoustic tuning  :wacko2:
When in doubt throttle out

"If you can't blind them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit."

I think this is the motto that's been chosen for use with this magic device.
Its also strange that they show no dyno charts, and don't even have a pic of what this system looks like.
If its patented, why not show it?

Arnie

Pat Conlon

Is the weight of the system supported where the head pipe the bolts to the head? That can't be, but I don't see any other mounting points.

I like his reply to the eBay question where he says: "..loud pipes saves lives..." What a dip shit.

Thanks for your thoughts.I would also like to see some dyno sheets to back up the magic claims.I wont be retiring my vance & hines any time soon!.In the mean time ,where can I get one of those $600 jet kits....they must be good!  :sarcastic:

Dennis Murray made an "X" pipe about 30 years. Now Dennis does know how to make a great pipe and is a real nice fella to deal with. Vance and Hines used it on the 80/81 GS1100 Pro Stock bike they were running.
Monty Campbell has made that pipe pictured for years. http://www.x-pipe.com/motorcycle.html  To answer Pat's question....it is secured by the exhaust studs only.  I have only seen 2 of those pipes on the road and that is after 35 years of riding

Arnie

Jeff,

You're looking at it wrong.  The question you should be asking is, "Where can I find fools to buy a $600 jet kit?"  The answer may be Ebay or Ducati shops :-)

After seeing this "X" pipe actually displayed.... How does it differ in function from the stock FJ exhaust other than the short mufflers (which are presumably less restrictive) ?
Both systems dump into a common 'collector' and have dual outlets.
I'd be pretty nervous about no rear support for the system.

As a Ducati owner, (and a cheap-ass one, at that) I take offense to that!!!  :sarcastic: And why are we talkin' $600 jet kits when we know that with this 'magical' pipe...
"My MX3 brand exhaust is different. It needs no Jet Kit, so you save $600 instantly. Even a free UFO is no bargain. "

A pipe that gains power without any modifications to the fuel mixture.   We use to call that 'FM'... F**king Magic.   Actually, I still do.  :negative:
Actually, a guy can live by motorcycling alone.

Although it might require multiple bikes. :D
