Help I.D the correct FZR1000 rear wheel

I'm looking at another rear wheel for my FJ that current is fitted with an 1989 FZR1000, 5.5x17" rear wheel.
The seller I'm dealing with has one that same size, but claims it is off a 1987 FZR1000 he is parting out.
It's my understanding that the 87 used the 4.0x18 rear wheel, Correct?

Is there any further way of I.D.ing this wheel prior to purchace?
The size is what I'm looking for, it's just listed as an 87 instead of the 89 like I would have expected.

Thanks for the help.

The previous owner of the bike could have replaced the 87 wheel with an 89.
I don't know about the sizes of the wheel but the part numbers are different.
87 is 2GH2533800FH, and the 89 is 3GM2533801UA.
I suppose if you ask the seller if it's a 4.0 x 18 or a 5.5 x 17 that would confirm it, but usually the first 3 digits of the part number are cast onto the wheel aswell as the size. Aren't they?

Pat Conlon

Correct, the size is shown as cast numbers on the rim. Leon, find out what the numbers are.

I don't understand your question Leon. Are you asking about axle/bearing concerns on the 18x4.5 rim? If so, why?
The important question is already answered.
If your existing rim is a 17x5.5, don't bother with the new rim, as you are taking a big leap backwards....

Hi Leon.

The fzr1000 genesis 18/4.5 and the exup 17/5.5 are two different mods and have different machining requirements. If you already have the exup 17/5.5,why would you change?.Is it bent?.The 17 inch rim certainly has a much broader tyre selection available compare to the 18 inch rim.

From the uk fjmods site.....

and the link for the genesis wheel conversion writeup...

If your keeping your 20mm fj axle the above writeup gives dimensions of whats required.Suzuki gsxr1100 6204 rear wheel bearings are a match for this mod.Readily available on ebay...

Sorry for the confusing.
It's not me.
I have no problem with the 5.5x17 wheel I have, just shopping for another to use as a spare.

The confusion comes from the seller listing this wheel as coming from a 1987 FZR1000.
My understanding is that this years was an 18" wheel. and he is listing the wheel as a 5.5x17 off of a 1987 FZR1000.
Didn't the FZR1000 go to a 17" wheel in 1989+?
I think the seller is fucked up on what he is advertising.

Yes all true.....I did this mod before I finally bit the bullet and installed the whole FZ1 mod. From memory '87 and '88 was 4.5x18.

Not really, but it's not a bad idea!

After getting my rear tire worn down to the point of it not being safe to ride any further at the Gunnison rally, I decided on the way home that I want to start bringing a mounted spare with me to rallys.
Then it will be just a simple matter of swapping rear wheels and I'm back in business.

Also, I'm a bit of a hoarder and I likes my extra bits and pieces for all of my vehicles...LOL!
