Key ignition switch problem

Hi,
I just parked my bike and I noticed that the headlight and the dash lights were still on. The key position was in "OFF" the way it is normally. I then started the bike and tried to shut it down by the key instead of the kill switch and it stayed running. The only thing that happens when I turn the key switch off is that the turn signal lights and brake light go off. I have since disconnected the battery so as not to run it down. Does anyone know what might be the problem.

Your ignition switch may be knackered. It controls the on/off functions. Otherwise you have a short else where keeping the circuits live in spite of the switch position.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

I think that since the barrel seems not to be in great shape because the key slides out when it is in the "ON" position I should just buy another one. It costs less than 50.00$ anyway and that is probably the problem. If not, at least the ignition key goes in properly. Are you able to remove it easily? I had my manual but major cleaning by my wife resulted in it just disappearing. Does anyone have a diagram or the removal instructions possibly.

Its just 2 screws (or maybe bolts?) to remove and it plugs into the wiring loom. You can probably do it without even having to pull the fairing off.

That is really great to hear. I will buy it from RPM tomorrow. Hopefully it doesn't take that long to arrive. It's a real pain disconnecting the battery everytime I use the bike. Thanks for the help, I'll post my results when I install it.

Mark, check to make sure the key is not in the 3rd position which activates the parking lights.

plug and play, no tank or fairing removal ,, i used a long extension bar, 1/4" with ten mm socket

Instead of disconnecting the battery couldn't I just unplug the ignition. That makes it much easier if possible because it doesn't involve removing the seat everytime I stop.

yup.  Also by disconnecting the ignition switch you are narrowing the problem.  That is - if the problem persists then it's not the switch.

Well I pulled the tank back to get access to the ignition switch connector and it was the problem. It was corroded. I cleaned it up and put some dielectric grease and it works great. Thanks for all the help.
