milometer reset 'button'

Any ideas how to source and subsequently replace the rubber gaiter??

A life has been well lived, if you have planted trees under who's shade you do not expect to sit.

I'm told I'm cynical, pessimistic and generally miserable. I say that I'm realistic! The fact that reality sucks is not my fault!

should be a file on here about that rubber, i think a harley carb uses the same type of thing if i remember the file  (popcorn)
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

I hear that the answer is as close as the local H-D dealer...  "the accelerator pump boot from Keihin carbs used on all H-Ds from the mid-late 80s up to the mid 2000s" works great.
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

It is part of the clear lens and is not serviced by Yamaha.

I have never had one in my hands to try and find a suitable replacement to date.

I have one that is nearly intact, guess I need to visit the local HD shop and verify the rumor. If it works it will keep the spiders out....

if i do manage to find a replacemnt boot of some description that fits, anyone know how to get the flat end part of the button off/how to get the boot on without yanking it and breaking it!!

Well FJ11.5 i do not want you to think in any way that i am ungrateful or anything other than pleased.....but they do say there is a fine line between genius and crazy!  how would anyone make the link between such an innocuos rubber part such as an accelerator pump boot and a milometer reset button!!

So i contact my local Harley dealer (in Norwich city) and spoke to a very helpful chap who emailed me the microfiche so i could identify the exact part i wanted (see 38 below)



It cost me the princly some of about £3.50 for the part and then another pound for VAT and postage.

As advised by FJmonkey i unscrewed the button on the end and removed the perished rubber boot, but left in place the rubber gasket that sort of lines the opening and prevents the milometer reset from rubbing against the sides.



I then took the sharpest blade i had and gently trimmed of the narrow end of the rubber opening ring just enough to prevent it from sticking to the side of the shaft, licked the end so that it would slip into place without issue.  Although the trimmed end looks a bit rough, it looks worse in the picture than in reality.  the button itself hides any imperfection so dont worry too much (but dont go crazy or you will balls it up and have to order another!)





And the finished article!  Nice and tidy!

Excellent job. I have already found that part number from one of my suppliers and should have them in hand sometime next week. The boot will go nicely with the new button I already stock.

Will the instrument cluster need taking apart to install.or is it a push in install?

If you look carefully at Nurse's picts, you can see that he did the repair without removing the instrument cluster.
