Rear sag FJ1200 3CV

 rider sag is 42mm & bike sag is 5mm.

Can I adjust this out to lessen the rider sag? I should add that I was not wearing my bike kit.

/quote] You can add more preload to the spring. It has an adjuster at the top of the shock on my 93 or buy the bog bones. Hope this helps. :biggrin:

This was my original post on another forum:

I bought the bike from a mate, he had the shock set up for riding with a pillion.

Yesterday, I carried 7 gallons of oil in the panniers and top box, the bike was noticeably a better ride.

My question is, what should I alter to achieve this effect, without having to carry 7 gallons around all the time?

I have the instructions, but, I thought it best to ask on here first.

The single adjuster knob affects both compression and rebound.

My thoughts are to lessen the compression on the spring as a starting point. Update, nope that's not the one is it!

A reply after a bit of dialogue was this:


so what you're saying is that

1- 427mm
2- 422mm
3- 385mm

so rider sag is 42mm

and bike sag is 5mm

next you need to measure the same stuff at the front of the bike 25_coolguy

i would say the rear has a bit too much rider sag and not much bike sag which could mean that your shock spring is too hard.

it is worth doing this as once you get front and rear set to the correct sag and correct spring rate it'll feel like the bike is on a rail going round bends 25_coolguy

Just done the obvious and visited their website.

"My symptoms are described in their manual.

" Harsh over bumps" = excessive compression damping, also "harsh over bumps, progressively unstable" = excessive rebound damping.

Not so sure about the progressively unstable bit, but I will have a go at reducing the compression & rebound with the one knob.

The manufacturers manual: Mine is the "Sport" shock.

I am not a suspension expert, but as I understand suspension settings - if you want to keep some bike sag and you want to reduce rider sag you'll need a heavier spring.  If you simply increase preload, it will reduce both bike and rider sag.  Bike sag seems pretty small already - would make it prone to "topping out" during normal use.

I reduced the rebound and compression setting by three clicks, that seems to have improved it.  :yahoo:
