Hey guys, I've had the bike for a year with plenty of miles but it still burns oil on start up and I'm about to do a valve cover gasket replacement and valve adjustment. anybody know what I can do to get rid of the smoke on start up or what might be the problem?

Thanks

Replace the piston rings and/or valve stem seals.
Those are the areas where oil can get into the combustion chamber and creat the smoke from the exhaust.
Diag. the problem very well before diving in.

Adjusting valves and replacing the valve cover gasket will do nothing for the smoke.

Got a high mileage 88 myself and find that if left on the side stand overnight it will blow smoke on start up. No problem if left on the center stand.

Most likely the problem will be valve stem seals. Never replaced them on the FJ so have no advice there.

Used to fill the cylinders with compressed air and pop the springs on car engines years a go to do the job in-situ can't see why it could not be done on the FJ that way to.

Randy at RPM has some above standard replacements too

That works, but there is a possibility of a valve losing seal and dropping into the cylinder. Using 1/4" cord and stuffing it into the cylinder thru the spark plug hole also works and there is NO danger of the valve dropping into the cyclinder....
