Question on KooKaLoo.

Yes, I had to look up the word in the urban dictionary, apt word.  I have been taking my time with my fj, wanting to get my skill back before any serious throttle twists.  I have got to the point where I can again see the tach in my lower peripheral vision with my eyes on the road, getting comfortable with situational awareness and not having to think about riding, just doing it.    I have done some second, third, fourth gear half throttle stuff (was impressed!), but not any full throttle until today.  Today starting at a long on ramp to I-95 I did a full throttle run from 3,000 rpm in first to fifth, shifting at 8,000 rpm, Man what a ride! (Commander Cody). :wacko3:  My question is that in first, around 6,000 to7,000 rpm, the bike felt like it "jumped a tooth".  The bike just stopped accelerating for a brief moment and the front end dropped a little before coming back up, suspension, not wheel. the engine sounded normal, and it went through the other gears fine.  My chain and sprockets are stock, new and the clutch is a year old Barnett.  Any ideas?

When you say it felt like it "jumped a tooth" was the bike in second gear at the time?

No, I was in first gear.  There was no problem in second, I was looking for that.

I hadda look, googled kookaloo, got a bunch of hits. Urban Dic was 4th and here's what it said:  1.  kookaloo  8 up, 5 down   
That feeling you get when you roll on the throttle of your motorcycle and you have to hold on for dear life!

Did you try running through first gear again to see if the same thing happened.  It could have been carbon build up, or something you hit but didn't see in the road, the suspension settling, momentary fuel loss, who knows.  You would have to run it hard like that a few time to determine the issue.  When I had the stock rim on mine it would start to raise the front then lose traction allowing the front to drop just as I was heading for second gear.  It kinda flipped me out until I figured out what was happening.  You know that engine is itching for you to run it to the red line.  :yes: 
Its always a rush, but you get use to it after a while.  Just make sure you have plenty of road in front of you because that bike will cover ground quickly.

Keep the rubber side up :good2:  Hope you can figure out what going on with the bike, but there is a good chance it won't happen again.

Hello, just went out for a quick test run.  The chain is adjusted correctly.  higbonzo, I think I figured it out.  I rolled to 5,000rpm in first gear at normal throttle, then opened it up all of the way, quickly, and the rear tire broke loose and spun up. Almost had an "accident" and not the crash type if you know what I mean.   I used to ride a Harley, the only way they will break traction at the rear is if you hit the REAR brake hard.  I have seen people do burnouts (brakestands) but did not realize a motorcycle could do it rolling, with just the throttle and no clutch.  It was a bit of a surprise to me.  Is this common?  And what the hell is it going to feel like to take it to the redline in all gears?  I knew that the fj1200 was going to be a fast bike, hence the cautious small steps in learning the bike, but I did not imagine it would be like this.  I used to own and drag race a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda with a 383 big block, 12 to 1 pistons, dual holley 750s, B&M racing transmision with a manual valve body, 3,000 stall converter, 3:91 limited slip rear end and nitrous oxide, and I thought that was fast, the fj is on another level.

This is nothing like a car, or even a drag car, unless you have driven in a sub 11 second 1/4 mile 155 mph + top end street car.  And those cars usually run you over $80,000 to own.  And even then there are not to many of those cars able to go from 0 to 60 in under 3 seconds.  Not that there is a good reason to do so, but it falls within realms of the FJ1200 possibilities.  Plus, when a car gets squirrely you are in a big cage, so your fear factor is a little less when you ass starts to pucker.   

You probably should take it easy for a while.  This bike is nothing like a Harley.

Because I am so light, and because it is so hard to get good rubber for the rear tire on these bikes, I used to be able to just light my tire up in second gear for at least 30 to 40 yards.  It was fun, but even when I heated the tire up well I couldn't get the front tire up in second when I drop the clutch.  It began to be unnerving and just plain dangerous as I started riding the bike harder and harder.  I finally switch over to the FZ1000 rims with some pirelli diablo's and that solved that problem.  Of course it caused another issue and burned out my clutch, but it's about time for a new one anyways.

Add a jet kit and a pipe and they go even better !   I am a big guy 285 lbs, my back tire won't spin when I crack the throttle unless I am trieng to do a burnout. Now with the pipe and kit the back end really squats down when I hit it hard !

Hrm.  I think I better not comment here...

Though if you're getting wheelspin in ANY gear at any time on dry, clean pavement... you do not have a 17" wheel with a fully warmed Shinko on it. :)


Also, having your chain too loose will feel like the trans is tearing teeth from the gears, if you're skipping the chain while on the gas super hard.  Once I realized that lowering the bike for racing meant negative swingarm angle and thus LOADS of squat and a looser chain, I figured this one out..

it was supposed to be but the color didnt show up for some reason...it will be updated after Eric and I return from our trip out west..... there are gonna be a LOT more states colored in when i return.   :good2:
