Mirrors on 86

So I'm trying to figure out a way to deal with mirrors on my 86FJ.  Previous owner lets things get out of hand.
There is rust inside the mirror in the cavity behind the mirror glass itself.  Lots of stuff rattling inside.
The mirror glass is really stained and weathered.  I would like to know if there is a way to get the mirror glass
off the mirror so I can deal with that.  Then I could go to a glass place and they could cut new mirror glass.
The arm and mounting is all in good shape.  Any thoughts.

I have never heard of anyone repairing OEM mirrors... I switched to CBR1000 mirrors and can see past my elbows now. This is what I did.

The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Thanks for the info.  I haven't been on the forum for a while.

No real way to get the glass out. The rattle is from the damping weight that came off the back of the glass.  Best solution is to drill a hole in the bottom and shoot some expanding foam back there.  NOT TOO MUCH.  It will blow out the glass.  Only other option is to order new units or find some on ebay.

I did what FJ monkey did and am very happy with the results. I did have to elongate the mounting holes in the CBR 1000 mirrors though. I wish I could remember which model year mirrors I used but I can tell you that I tried CBR 600 mirrors first and couldn't make them work although I had heard they could be made to fit.

CBR1000,  '02 or '03 was what I used.  Took the mirrors out of the OEM Honda brackets, and installed them in the FJ brackets (took a bit of filing on the inside of the bracket where the mirror stem wanted to hit). With the FJ brackets, they bolted right on... About an hour, maybe a little more.

There is a way to get the glass out of the OEM mirrors, you'll need a heat gun or hairdryer and a credit card style piece of plastic as a tool.
Heat the plastic mirror casing up with the hair dryer, work the credit card shim in between the glass and the mirror case and gently run it around the edge till it pops out.
Inside there will be a heap of rotted expanding foam and a couple of small metal plates about 1"X2"
These act as vibration dampers.
Clean it out, squirt some expanding foam(comes in a pressure pack, buy it at Home Depot, Lowes or Bunnings) into the cavity and let it set overnight.
Sink the metal plates into the foam while it is still wet.
File and sand it to shape.
Replace the glass the same way you got it out.
You might have to play around with the placing of the amount of foam/metal plates as the plates may have risen up over the edge of the plastic case if you've put too much expanding foam in.
Don't be tempted to just drill a hole and squirt foam in.
You'll blow the glass out and it will shatter.

I tried the heat gun and I was able to get the mirror glass out.  Inside there are 2 larger and 1 smaller weight in each mirror cavity.  Were those weights glued to the back of the glass mirror originally?  Or were they somewhere else in the plastic housing?  I have a local glass company trying to cut me some new mirror glass, using the old ones as a pattern.  We will see how they do.  I just want to be sure I put the weights back in the right spot.  Any body know exactly how they are supposed to be positioned inside there? :unknown:
