Recently bought an X police Fj1200, worked very well, better than an 88 model Fj 1200 I recently sold, however on a trip up to Perth the other dday it began running a little rough as I traveled on it got worse running (I felt) on 2 cylinders, stopping at a set of lights I was alerted by a car driver that something was leaking from the bike -Yep petrol and lots of it!.

Managed to coaks bike home, stripped it down found one plug black the other 3 looked good, good spark on all plugs when cleaned.
Carbs stripped a little crud it them, replaced filter under tank.
Blew out all galleries and checked everything.

Carbs back on bike- started a little lumpy and smoky however put this down to burning off the old fuel what ever in the exhaust- gradually smoke cleared ran crisp- Brilliant!!!!!

Got cleaned up helmet on lets go for a ride- NO stared bike and Yes pissed petrol out, running like a rough twin cylinder!

QUESTION
What have I missed???????

Float valves didnt leak when I checked them.

Appreciate replies

Either the O-rings that are around the float valve are perished or you have dirt on one or more float needle seats that is letting the fuel just keep pouring into the carb.

You can try tapping on the offending carb, or disconnect the fuel pump and run the bike till it stops from lack of fuel.  When you re-connect the pump the flow of fuel will (usually) flush the dirt off the needle seat.  If its the O-rings, you'll have to take the carbs apart again and replace them.

Stripped carbs again float needle jets are protected by a very fine gauze, couldnt find anything obvious, blew out all gallries and jets. reassembled carbs onto bike.
Bike started and ran well, went for a 100k run with mate, bike performed faultlessly untill I arrived home when it started missing nd running rough again, though this time no fuel being thrown out?

Ideas??? Plugs spark & good colour, air filter a little grubby- new one ordered, petrol new oil and filter new? The only thing old on the bike is me!

You got shit in your gas.....Drain your gas tank. Take off the petcock and wash out the tank. Clean the petcock screen. Flush out the fuel lines
Take the carbs off and clean them again. The little screens at the end of the float needle barrel pops off so take them off and clean the screens. Clean the pilot jets. Clean out all the little holes in the jet nozzles...all of them..

Now laddie, you've had 2 bites at the apple...2 posts with 2 problems....who are you?

Tank cleaned out, carbs off, new fuel filter, plugs, oil and oil filter, carbs completely disasembled and thourghly cleaned out absolutely no evidence of dirt or muck float valves working great-
Appears bike runs 100km great then has a problem- No 2 plug different colour to rest and makes no difference when cap removed whilst engine running.
Begining to wonder whether Valve out and presurising carb, will purchase a compression tester and check compression.
Awaiting new carb parts from member in USA.

Still appreciate thoughts.

Yet another Western Australian. Welcome  :hi:
We Aussie residents have a small handicap in the manners department, on this forum, (if ya lucky and get ta the East Coast next March you`ll get ta meet him) - So, individually we have ta add some class to this malee in tha form of initial personal info - difficult as that may be, given our natural, cultural disdain for normality, ..... However, a little "how ya goin I`m Norm from Arakoon" keeps us outa the sinbin and on the field - for at least tha first half of tha game, before we can gouge their eyes out and apolagise to the ref. - then ya might also add how ya actually cleaned the tank out - cause it`s still sus (IMHO). (- might also check if opening the the petrol cap helps too, before lookin elsewhere) Nice ta know ya appreciate thoughts though.  Doug

There's a Perth 3 hours from me in Canada too. Only been through there half a dozen times so can't vouch for their character :)

re: Float seal O-rings - I imagine those O-rings should offer some resistance as the seat is inserted in the hole? Mine are just dropping into place with no push required.

A fuel smell problem has evolved into an over flow problem which I suspect is from picking up debris when my tank got down to vapours before I could find a place to refuel. Anyway, the first time pulling the FJ carbs was a breeze compared to the 1979 XS750 that has been my ride for the last 7 years.

If someone wants to see any images I refer to in posts, first check my gallery here. If no bueno, send me a PM. More than glad to share.

No the fairing is a standard Western Australia Police iten however the screen has been cut down approximately 150 mm this tends to create huge wind noise issues, even with ear plugs you get off the bike feeling fatigued, have found a suppplier for a new screen, though this is not going to make the bike any prettier!

Advice was right, new needle valves and a good clean out of the tank have resulted in a bike that is a rocket ship, does everything it should do. Next step is tyres any suggestions ??? the current ones follow every undulation in the road the rear is nearly square the result of straight road driving.
