Best stoplight switch to use with an FZ1 front master cylinder?

Hello,

Well, the brake mods to my FJ are coming along. Randy Raduechel has successfully put on the blue dot calipers, Galfer lines, and FZ1 front master cylinder. There's just one problem:

The ABS FJ has a 3-conductor front handlebar switch that sends power to either the ECU or the stop light. But... the FZ1 has a 2-conductor switch since it does not have ABS (and it seems that even the ABS models use a 2-conductor switch). Of course, the FJ switch is not compatible with the FZ1 master cylinder.

Does anyone who has done this mod know a good substitute? I suppose one could modify the FZ1 switch but... well, you know.

Thanks in advance for any help!

(And huge thanks to Randy for making my FJ road worthy again!)

the three terminal brake switch from a ABS equipped FJR1300 will fit perfectly on the FZ1 brake master.

Hola Anthony

One curiosity: do you maintain the ABS with the brake conversion?

Racerman: THANK YOU!!! (I assume the wiring arrangement/connector on the FJR1300 switch is compatible with that of the FJ, making it literally a bolt-on mod?

Randy is thinking to accomplish the same thing with the FZ1 switch and a relay. Either path should work just fine.

Alf, yes, the whole goal is to maintain the ABS. We have not messed with the wheel sensor, pump, etc. All we did is change the front master cylinder, lines, and calipers. In theory, the ABS should be unaffected. We put on blue-dot calipers to increase stopping power, Galfer steel lines to get the brake fluid where we need it without wasting pressure bulging soft hoses, and the FZ1 master cylinder to pump enough fluid to engage said calipers.

The problem is that the FZ1 is not ABS, so it only has a 2-wire front master cylinder switch that only closes the brake light circuit when you squeeze the lever. The FJ has a 3-wire switch. Normally, this switch sends a signal to the ECU. Squeezing the brake lever stops the signal to the ECU and turns on the brake light (which presumably alerts the ABS system that the bike is slowing down). Leaving out the ECU connection lights up the ABS light. So, the goal is to keep the ECU/ABS system handy, and it looks like either an FJR1300 switch or a garden-variety Bosch 5-pin relay will do the trick!

Yes..... one common center terminal and then either the normally open terminal or the normally closed terminal..... just make sure you get the right wires on the right terminals and you should be golden.

i guess you could use a relay but the FJR switch is plug n play for what you want to do.
