Hello everybody i have a problem with the old lady

When i start her up she idles fine with chocke and after a minute or so she dies and will not run without throttle but when she is warm she idles fine without throttle or chocke...

Anyone who have an idea what the throuble could be??
I have changed the carb boots and cleaned the carbs in the hunt for the solution but the problem is still there and unchanged :unknown:

Hope anyone have a good idea...

Hello there.

I reckon it's because the engine is not warm enough to let it idle.

racerman_27410

how long are you leaving it on full choke?

the FJ it always needs full choke for a cold start..... leave it at full choke until the high idle starts to drop..... only then reduce the amount of choke until you get a stable idle.
(usually a couple of minutes)

Thanks for the reply ;)

This will happen on full or half choke normally i have put something on the throttle and let her warm up or i can drive with the choke on half but she will die as soon as i let go of the throttle...
She will not start without choke Naturally...

Once the engine is fully up to temp, what is the idle speed?
If its less than 1000 - 1100 rpm, raise it and see if that fixes your problem.

I have tryed that too
i have tryed to turn the idle up so it runs when cold but then when its warm it idles at 3000rpm + -

First and most obvious:  It won't idle because it's not warm yet.  :)  It should take 3-5 minutes of running on the choke (actively riding, not just idling on it) to get to a temp where it can idle without the choke.

If it takes ages before it's warm enough to idle, I'd wager richening the pilot circuits, by using bigger pilot jets, screwing out the mix screws, or probably just giving the carbs a good cleaning(!!!!) will help tremendously.

Also possible, yet less so, is that the synch has gone off, which can do screwy things to your idle as well.
