Yes they the same and will work, you may need to see if the head gaskets are the same though. I have 1100 heads on my race engines.

Hi bob the only reason i want to use the 1100 head is i understand the cams are much better for a bit more power

Cams are the same as far as I know. We have tech in legends racing and I'm not allowed to do much. Slotted cam sprockets is about it for performance. 3 angle Valve job, springs. But there is alot of aftermarket go fast parts available, most don't need more power just better running bikes. Jetting and suspension are more useable mods.

When I had my '84 in for a re-build, Randy took my cams and measured them against the later FJ cams, and found that they were the same. e.g. lift, duration and ramp profile.

They are all the same Worldwide.  I've had this conversation 'til i'm blue in the face on the XJR UK forum, and it wasn't 'til Randy came along and confirmed it that the knobheads shut up about it.
They all seemed to think that putting FJ1100 cams in their XJR's made them more powerful.  Knobs.

I heard the hot tip was using two exhaust cams  :mail1:

Same as it is here.  Some people will probably recognise the name if you start banding it about. I mentioned to someone on here that i'd bumped into Richie and Shirley at the Ponderosa a few weeks back.
I've got no time at all for that Doc Hacker and his cronie Ernie, big headed, know it all, ignorant, gits. :hang1:

HEAD: The heads are all the same as well with the exclusion of the EGR ports found in today's heads and the cosmetic change of the square fins for the XJR. The same thing with the parts number for the head, the base is the same but the prefix has changed over the year, until the EGR head came out which is a different base number, but the head is still the same. (Believe me I have checked...)

CAMS: Well, I can say I have never seen a foreign cam, but based on the part numbers throughout the years, they are all the same. The base number of each cam has remained the same since day one on both the 1100 or 1200. The beginning prefix has changed a few times and that is done based on model years and different manufactures.

Now, the notion of the two exhaust cams has come up...I have tried this way back in the day and I can tell you there is no noted performance to be found. Heck I even tried two intake cams, and all combinations ran the same. I have a local machine shop that welds & grinds automotive cranks & cams and they have a profile reader that programs the grinder.

I took all kinds of cams 1100, 1200 intake & exhaust to them back in 1997 and the cam specs are the same in regard to lift & duration. There is a slight difference in the holes if reference to timing but that is a manufacturing tolerance. It is a difference of no more that three degrees. This can also be noted in the cam gear which has two different size bolt holes, but the shouldered bolt are the same size. They have to use a larger hole to allow for the manufacturing tolerance.

That is one thing the car racer guys have done over the years on the sealed engines is drill out the small hole to match the big hole. This the allows a three degree change in cam timing for better performance. Granted this modification is illegal and I constructed a specific toll to measure the cam gear holes and to date I have personally found more than 20 sets of illegal gears that have been confiscated and removed. That doesn't count how many have been located nationally.

GASKETS: And finally, the head gaskets are different between the 1100 & 1200. I do note that Cometic the aftermarket manufacture has grouped the 1100 into the 1200 gasket. I have never built a stock 1100, so I have never had the chance to try a 1200 head gasket on the 1100 block. I know it will fit, but it will open up the chamber since the gasket is larger than the bore which will lower the compression ratio and possibly cause hot spots between the head and deck of the cylinder.

I hope I have covered it all...
