AMA Flat Track racing will return Saturday night, Aug. 18 to the legendary Indy Mile at the Indiana State Fairgrounds during the Red Bull Indianapolis GP weekend after a one-year hiatus.
The race was revived for an annual run when MotoGP first came to Indy in 2008. It was removed from the schedule last year after high winds caused stage rigging to collapse in the infield of the Mile during a concert two weeks before the race was scheduled, killing seven and injuring more than 40.
Some of the greatest names of American motorcycle racing have won at the Mile, including Kenny Roberts, Chris Carr, Scott Parker, Jay Springsteen, Ricky Graham and Bubba Shobert. U.S. Grand Prix stars Nicky Hayden, Kenny Roberts Jr., Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Rainey, Eddie Lawson and Freddie Spencer also flat-tracked at the Mile.
Perhaps the most memorable moment ever at the Mile came Aug. 29, 2009, when King Kenny Roberts pulled out his notorious Yamaha TZ750 for a few ceremonial laps during the AMA event. But Roberts doesn't turn ordinary demonstration laps: He wrung the neck of that evil, vicious machine, throwing the capacity crowd - including one Valentino Rossi - into a time tunnel spinning with rapture.
