I remember chasing one of these on my RD400 back in the day. Going down from Palomar thru the citrus groves to the junction. Hell of a great chase drafting each other and stuffing it into the corners. Both bikes were very equal and one of the best street races I was ever company to.

Great day today, Steve,

I have an SR500 engine on my workbench, with plans to put it into my XT500.

My grandpa bought one new back in 1978 (I think), and after he passed away, my dad gave it to my youngest brother who only rode it for a short time before he sold it.
It was black.
I remember it was a trick getting it started with the compression release and all.
I was never a big fan of the bike, but I did ride it a few times to form my opinions on it.
Gramps was old school and liked the thumper, but he had a hell of a time staring it at his age and he later moved onto different bikes, and left this one in the corner until his death.
I don't think the bike had over 3000 miles on it the whole time it was in our family.
This is one of the pictures my brother took of it while he had it on craigslist.

It's a trick getting one started without the compression release...

All you have to do is (without giving it any gas... the pumper carb will flood it right away) get it just past the compression stroke, and give 'er a firm kick.  After you get a feel for it, you can quit looking at the little cheater window.
