Valves, paint prep, spin-on, carb synch, etc, etc

For the last week I've been working on the '87.

Took the valve cover off and checked clearances.  Waiting on shims from Randy, should be here today. (Damn, he ships fast and reasonably.  Plus his prices seem to be pretty good too.)

Since the speedo was whining like I do when I "accidently" slam my nuts in the car door, I figured I better clean and lube it.  Since I had to take the fairing off,,,,,, I figured what the hell, might as well start the paint prep.

Hopefully it all goes back together and works when I'm done.  I'll get some pics up later.

If you lube your speedo cable, don't use a light oil.  A mildly heavier lube will help prevent your speedo from bouncing.  Been there!

Any lube is better than nothing, but I use a light moly grease.  Just make sure you tighten the cable ferrules at both ends.

From the factory, a replacement OEM cable uses a quite heavy grease, about what you'd use for suspension linkage bushes.  The aftermarket ones (at least, the one I bought) came lubed with very light oil (think WD40 or so).  Without the damping effect of the thicker grease, the cable is free to twist and untwist a bit, leading to speedo bounce.  With the heavier grease, that motion is damped out and it works much better.

I think on the last one I bought, I used antisieze goop, that heavy silver crap that gets all over everything, because it was closest to me at the time.  Worked very nicely and gave me no problems.

That's an understatement.  How does that crap spread like it does?  Must be a close cousin to the alien Blob.  I get it on me just opening the cabinet I store it in.

We used it on everything on the sprint car.  I used to come home from a race covered head-to-toe in that shit.
