I really hope this has done no damage to the engine after i was told i used to go and start it up a once every six months and my guess would be rev the crap out of the engine.

Don't feel bad, it's hard not to feel like a sucker when you're dealing with a lying bastard.  My buddy just bought a 4 year old DRZ 250 with , by the looks of the bike, tires, etc., looked almost brand new. The PO was a cop who had bought the bike to ride with his young son.  All looked good.

When my friend was unloading the bike at his house, he noticed that the engine case had been JB welded.  He called the prior owner to say WTF, and was told, 'Oh yeah, I forgot about that.  It's never leaked though'.  Yeah , right.  I forgot.  Another lying bastard.

If the diaphragms just have pinholes, they can be repaired with liquid electrical tape.
