That thing is so cool, it's even got sports mirrors, love it.

Bring it back to the U.S.
It would be an excellent memento of your time in Honkyland, yeah?
Flames and a big/small block?
Nah, how 'bout Suburu WRX running gear and keep the original shell on top?

You gotta bring that back with you!   I have warm place in my heart for cars like that, it's sort of a /70's version of the old Morris Minor. Basic with no frills. The thing I love the most is the towing hitch, what exactly can you pull with that?
There is a local guy that owns the original 2 stroke Trabant and he brings it to local car shows with a trail
blue smoke coming and going.

Ha ha - yes, the 2-stroke. My neighbor owns one. When he starts it up all I think of is an old snowmobile.

I have now MATCHING mirrors. $5 each.

It currently does not run. I replaced the coil, cap, rotor, plug wires, and plugs. No spark. Seems my electronic ignition box went out. Good timing. :negative: The red light on the box would flash when it picks up the rotor's position on #1 cylinder. Now it doesn't llight up at all. I took a photo of the ignition box, printed it, and showed the local guys at the parts store. They started laughing and pointed at the box and the ancient phone numbers printed on it. Seems it was made in Budapest - just down the street.

I had some trouble with the ignition for a couple months. I ordered a Crane Cams Fireball ignition system from the U.S., and waited for a month for it to arrive. Installed it, and it still wouldn't fire the coil. I replaced the coil 4 times. Then I went to an auto parts store here in my small town and showed him the wiring diagram for the ignition system. He said I needed a RUSSIAN coil. I brought it home, installed it, and it FIRED RIGHT UP and it's been running good ever since. Shoot, it even gets up to almost 70 MPH now!

So at this point, I have an East German Communist car with an Italian engine, Chinese gauges, American ignition, and a Russian coil.

The latest improvement was the '57 clone fin. I painted white inside the fin and applied chrome pinstripes and a "Trabant" decal. Also notice the Chevy emblem on the hood. I still plan on chroming the tail light housings and lowering the front a couple inches.

Here's a look at the dash. I installed the tach, water temp gauge, stereo, and cigarett lighter. Yes, that's a "4 on the tree" column shifter.

And the Fiat 903 engine. I had to install that big white duct for the heater intake. Before, it was sucking in all the fumes and burning oil directly into the car. Yuk. :bad:

A 'Coon tail on the aerial would rock.

Here's a picture I took with my phone yesterday. How could I pass up an opportunity to get a photo of my Trabbi next to a couple MiG-21s? :greeting:

Now you need a roof mounted, turret auto-loading potato cannon to fit into that picture....
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Careful! The flightline crew might consider it as F.O.D. (Foreign Object Debris) and dispose of it!
