FJ1100 Clutch Master Cylinder??

Hi Guys, new to the forum...

I got my first FJ a couple months back.. a 1984 FJ1100 Red/Silver.  LOVE the bike..

Currently, the clutch master cylinder is dripping slightly... can I replace it with an fj1200 cmc?  If not, where would I go for a good used one?  I emailed a guy who was parting one out, but when he went to ship it, he noticed that it was unusable. :(

Hello Josh, welcome to the zoo! Those Silver/Red '84's hold a special place in my heart.
Yes, you can use any FJ year clutch m/c for your clutch. That does not mean that you should. You roll the dice when you buy someone's used m/c
Why not just rebuild what you have? Kit cost is $25 from Randy @ RPM. 1/2 hour later you have new m/c

You might as well spend another $18 with Randy and rebuild your clutch slave while you're in there:

Keep an eye out for a MityVac for bleeding your brake and clutch lines. A very handy tool. (Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc)
Replace your 27 year old soft rubber brake lines (right away) and wire tie the elbow on your petcock (asap): http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=3265.0

Sorry Pat,

They are not and the forum has spoken on this issue.  According the the poll, the 3CV was chosen as the best and most beautiful FJ ever made.  :yes:  And I feel the midnight blue 90 was the prettiest one of all.  Even though I now own my second silver/white 90.

I agree with Pat, in my opinion the 84 red and silver are without question the most beautiful of the FJ's.

When I rebuilt my master cylinders I used a piece of rod stock, about 1/8" in diameter, to make an arbor to hone the cylinder. I taped a piece of fine ScotchBite to the arbor, wrapping it around the the arbor and used a drill to lightly hone the cylinder. It worked good, just be carefull not to over do it and get the bore out of round or size.

those 1st year fj's are smooth and sexy.

you can use a fjr1300 master cyl  and it will give you a lighter pull for the clutch. which is helpful after you double up your clutch spring.

Wow.. I had been busy and hadn't gotten to check the forum out for replies... glad to see this is such an active and friendly forum.

I do like the red/silver FJ... and it does have a matching red/silver Corbin seat which doesn't look too shabby - http://www.roguemammoth.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/DSCF1633.JPG

Personally, though, I've always thought the red/white FJ's were my personal favorite.  I wouldn't have minded a rd/black to match my first street bike, an fj 600, either.  I do love my red/silver, though.

Thanks for the link to the rebuild kit.  I had seen another one somewhere, but they wanted 50+ for it, so I thought it would be cheaper to just replace with a used unit.  I'll buy that kit and slap it together, put my new clutch lever on, and ride off into the sunset, lol.

If I ever do need to replace with an fj1200, I read there's one difference.. some kind of pin that keeps the choke in place?  Can anyone elaborate?

It says Lockhart on the lower area. This is new to me...I've never seen that style before. It looks like a interesting replacement for our chin fairings.

No idea where that came from, lol.  I do like the look of the slightly larger chin fairing, though.  I got it from a guy near Grand Rapids, MI for 1670 bucks w/ the bags and the original seat as well.  It had about 28k on it.  Seems to be in fair condition and runs great, although I've noticed smoking from some oil somewhere in the front burning off after a couple rides 600 miles into ownership, along with the cmc issue.  Oil isn't low, but I'm gonna change the valve cover gasket and see if that takes care of it, as it does seep a little bit there.  Came with the original owner's manual, which had all the service work done to the bike listed as far as I could tell.  Valve job was last done at 20k miles or so, so I better get on that.  Hopefully, you guys can guide a complete noob through checking and adjusting valve clearances on this site?

Probably getting ahead of myself though, as the screws on the CMC are completely stripped.  Any tips for the best way to remove them?  (Seems like they have been or have become stripped on almost every bike I've ever had.. I already have a full set of stainless steel bolts/screws to replace everything on the bike, if I can just get them out!)

Take it off, get it on the workbench where you can get a better angle at it.  Impact driver, job done.

If the impact driver doesn't work, drill the heads off them, remove the lid and use vise grips to undo the remaining threaded shafts.  Regards, Pete.

dont forget the valve cover bolt grommets.... i would say thats probably where your oil leak is coming from... seen it many times on many FJ's

Just wanted to reply and update that the impact screwdriver worked wonders.  I ordered one of the ones you can hit with a hammer from ebay.  Put it in the stripped spot expecting to fail miserably and within 3 quick taps with a mallet, the screw was turning freely.  I immediately replaced both the clutch master cylinder screws as well as the front brake cylinder screws with new stainless steel ones.  Thanks for the great advice! 

PS - If there's any FJ rider in the Chicago area who wants to help/teach me about working on my fj (I really want to strip a little bit of it down/fix minor things and make it shine like new.)  I can offer lots of beer and computer parts/work/whole computers :) just PM me, as I'm pretty sure I'm done for the season and ready to work on this thing.
