Makeshift air scoops

I have been studying the scoops for the 85 1100. I know I am missing one of the mounting points for them and in my lack of finding a good undamaged pair I am contemplating doing a quickfix and free temporary solution.

My plan is to make my own scoops. Make a mounting bracket for them and get a heating hose from a gsxr Ive seen or from a car. Somebody suggested I use the pump from a kreepie crawly(the thing that cleans your pool) but to my reckoning that kind of plastic would be too weak?

I have made some progressions in the shape of what I plan to make and and I plan to mount it so that wind resistance wont brake it off. Also thought of ways to mount the hose/pipe to make sure it directs air to the cams without melting. The problem I have is that the plastic I have at hand is far to flimsy and will flex and rattle in wind resistance. So I would like to know a cheap but very sturdy kind of plastic I could use that is still workable(need to shape it obviously)?

Also I have thought alternativly ar drilling into the front of the fairing a little  off to the side and just inserting pipes that would do exactly the same thing the side scoops would(got the idea after looking at some kawis and gixxers). I am thinking it could work but am worried about damaging the fairing itself, then again it might give the bike a different kind of look.

Should I go with my temporary fix until I get the legit scoops or should I go with my "alternative" plan?

Any suggestions are welcome especially on things I am overlooking

Don't bugger up your fairing with a diy airscoop, you will eventually find one, try the legends race guys, they are always stripping bikes for their car engines.
I've often been asked, 'What do you old folks do now that you're retired'?

"Well. I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background, and one of the things I enjoy most is turning beer, wine, Scotch, and margaritas into urine."

use some 3" ABS plumbing elbows , they come in black and will look cool .

seriously , a couple of 90's and some 45's with a short piece in between should handle it . use some colored duct tape to hold it all in place . :good2:

you could also make them out of sheet metal from an old coffee can.

improvise something before you smoke your engine , the scoops need to be there.

You're fast on your way to starting the next trend in bike mods. It has to be outrageous, though. Like a *REALLY BIG* pair of funnels as scoops! Trash can lid sized! Painted pink!!!

No need to paint these pink. Jist use Tampon tubes and glue them in with crazy glue, works. :ireful:

Hey gang,
Maybe we can work on some examples for Jesse to follow........just a thought..... :rofl2: I'll be out in the shop in 1 hour.......pics will follow

Yeah, Jesse. Like the NASA engineers in "Apollo 13".

What kind of shit do you have laying around your house?

All these replies have been farking funny and borderline on sarcastic vs actually do it :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:

All I can say is that I really do have a few ideas that I would like to try. Everybody says an FJ doesnt stay stock for long, but then again bodywork is not something I wanna mess with. It still has to look presentable(maybe even make the bike look better) but above all it shouldnt affect the handling of the bike.

I agree I dont want to toast my engine, so far I have been fine(or maybe just lucky) but the affects are starting to show. The scoops as it seems really dont go cheaply here in SA, theres an FJ enthusiast I dscovered who can get all sorts of parts for the FJ but sitting at R1200 for a single scoop, the price is fairly high. Unfortunately he wont lend them to me to make a mould out of them either.

So I have come to a conclusion, maybe this temporary fix should be a permanent one(atleast until I find something much cheaper) I have fancied the fairing on the old kawa zx6s and the fair the air is drawn through the front and transported to the cams through the petrol tank(it looks like some sci fi shit)

Couldnt find the exact model I liked but this is what I was basing my idea on. It would be nice if the light wasnt shaped like such a box, but I would like to design some "scoops" in the front sides on the fairing next to the light.(obviously it would be a proper job lookig neat and professional) Would like to use the same sort of idea where pipes channel air to the cam heads and since the front fairing is fixed to the frame I wont need to worry about bending the pipes when doing turns.

If you guys are shitting with me and thinks its a terrible idea let me know. If you think it will really work then give me ideas and tips on what to avoid.

The front fairing already has a slight crack right next to the light and Im worried that I could do severe damage to the fairing by going ahead with such a project. It is only plastic but its expensive plastic nonethetheless.

BTW I especially like Mike Olsons idea of using the plumbing parts, could totally see how cool they would look on an FJ!(idea is priceless)but no Im not that desperate for scoops :blum1: Want something that will work and look like it suited the bike.

In my opinion Yamaha should have just made the 'scoops' in the front of the fairing-not so many people break it, therefore no need for uneducated cheapskate backyard mechanics like me trying to come up with solutions :dash2: :dash2: :dash2: :dash1: :dash1: :dash1:

A NACA duct would work, I'll bet.......  Google came up with a few.

Those are actually quite good Rich thanks, I dont know if the styling would suit the FJ, but theyre cheapish and probably work so they are worth a try.

Hold it, I was in the garage and found that funnel thingy I hung around the dogs head to keep him from licking the stitches on his sack after he was castrated.

With a little duct tape, cheap NACA Duct substitute, could look kind cool on the fairing if other "solutions" do not pan out. Of course, could find the proper OEM faring part  :nyam2:, nah.
