Our family's dog died yesterday

It's been very sad at our house the last couple days. My oldest daughter came home yesterday afternoon and accidentally hit our Miniature Daschund with the car. He had serious internal injuries, and later died at the vet. We had him for almost 6 years, and this is the first dog our family has lost. He was VERY attached to my wife... everywhere she went, he was right there, snuggling, etc. My wife is not doing well with this. I made a little coffin last night. What tore me up was when my younger children put a couple things in the casket with him like a little bone and a golf ball he used to play with. THAT was hard. With my daughter feeling responsible for his death, this is even harder than it would have been otherwise.

I know some are thinking, "It's just a dog." But anyone who has been through a similar situation knows how tough this is. It hurts me to see my family hurt. :sorry:

Sorry for your loss!

BTDT... my Mom ran over our dog when I was a kid.

We both looked, but neither of us saw her in the driveway.        :sorry:

I am very sorry and that was a terrible accident. We have lived at our house for 15 years and have buried three dogs, all Akita's, on our property. You will get over your loss and getting a new dog will help. Dauchsands are noble and great animals, really good dogs. We now adopt Akita's, but getting a dog integrated once they were abused by some arsehole is always a challenge.

Good luck and please remember to put a seat belt on the doggie the next time you let him drive, it is the law.

My condolenses.  Dogs definitely become part of the family. It's certainly true at our house.

My hunting partner has had Labs, Chesapeake's, and a small bunch of Beagles over the years. He loves to hunt and loves to hunt with his dogs.  One day in the duck blind, I asked him which was his favorite dog he'd ever owned.  He said a Miniature Dachshund he'd had years earlier.  It made me take note of them after that.  They really are great little dogs.

Again, sorry for your loss.

Sorry for the loss.

We lost a dog under similar circumstances in 98, very painful.  maybe "just a dog" but still a family member.

My heart goes out to you and your family for the loss of your puppy.  I know that this is hard on a family as it is never "just a dog" when it's your dog.

I cried like a little girl when I had to put my 16 year old down.

Again, my heart felt sympathies,

Sorry to hear about Charlie.. We just lost our Cockatiel last weekend. Bad part is it was inherited from my fiance' Mother who passed away 1 year ago today. So she took it pretty hard. Any pet when in a family is much more than just another animal. We picked up our Lab/Golden retriever from Animal Welfare in January. He's about 3-4 years old. He's very loyal and haven't had one bit of problem with him. But again I'm really sorry for your loss.

Gee mate he sounds like he was a great dog. Commisarations to you and your family. Pets are family, no doubt about it and I know when either of my dogs pass away I'll be very very sad.  Dogs express their feelings and love for you unconditionaly and selflessly. Have a big cry and then stay strong for you wife.

Wow, I feel for you and your family.  Had my beagle, Kane, put down a couple years ago.  He just got old and tired and quit eating.  Every evening for 11 years he layed next to me in  my chair.  Couldn't take a shower or go to the bathroom without him tagging along.  Loved to hang out in the garage with me and never complained about the bluegrass music.  Although sometimes he sang along.  He'd lay in bed with me till I shut off the TV then jump off and go to his bed.  Made him a little tomb stone that reads "Kane - The Best Dog That Ever Lived."  Pretty corney, but you really get attached to them.  I especially feel for you daughter - I'm sure she's really feeling down.  I haven't been able to bring myself to get another dog yet - afraid I'll never find another one that measures up to Kane.
Simplicity of character is the natural result of profound thought.
