Hi all, been away for a while, but having a bit of problem - with my steering lock. I first of all want to know if the 1985 fj1100 actually has a steering lock (i was under the impression all bikes had one but I just cant lock my steering), if so how do you work it?

On the previous bike I owned, I only figured out how to use the steering lock 6 months after purchase, so I very well may be doing it wrong. But I have inserted the key, pushed it slightly in, turned the steering and then attempted to turn the key further to lock the steering and no luck - I eventually gave up for fear of breaking the only key I have.

Any help would be much appreciated, if I have ommitted any detail forgive me, but I wouldnt think it should be so difficult to lock steering - if the fj actually has a steering lock, I remember reading about someone locking their steering so I thought it should be possible.

The only reason I ask is because with my travels I dont always have the opportunity to put my bike in a secure area and would atleast like to stop some 10 year old from wheeling it down the street...

Turn the bars all the way to the left or all the way to the right (it's actually just a smidgen less than all the way) and then turn the key as you described.  It should slide right into the lock position.

Thanks, so I know my key aint original, now I tried again to lock it, still no budging, is it possible that my entire ignition system is no longer original and thus has lost the lock function? here are 2 pictures for comparison

This is from my '89.   'Lock' position will lock the steering of course, and the 'P' setting will lock it with the park lights on.

Had the same issue with my 11 , checked it after buying a new. set, was just gummed up, works fine now I don't need it
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

You know that you might have to push down on the key while turning it into the lock position?

Just a thought,

Hi There.
With the ignition lock, at the bottom end of it, turning the key to the lock position pushes out of the barrel a metal pin into a hole in the steering head tube at either full left or right (sometimes backing off a smidgen) to lock the forks. If you cant get it to lock using the key,(which has never been hard on my 1tx 1200) your going to have to pull the ignition lock out to check it properly, ie off with the handlebars, triple tree top plate,( unless of course someone here knows a better way :good:). Once you get it out you will be able to see if the pin on the lock is working...if its more than cleaning/lubrication, you will probably  need a new one(unless of course some one here knows how to fix it!)....I got one like this (cant be screw drivered :good:)  what Randy at rpm supplies...

If the pin IS working its probably not lining up with the holes on the steering head tube. You might need to check the condition and adjustment ( requires c spanner)off the headstock bearings and washers.see this thread...
