Err.. may i know what does it really mean sir?  (popcorn)

Mavrix

Helo again friends!

Thanks for the replies, just that after a months searching, i got some great offer for a CDI replacement for my FJ. Its just that the CDI came from a scrap 1996 Yamaha VMAX 1200cc.
Is it possible to use it? i though it can be done because the connector port seems identical..
(popcorn)

Arnie

Maybe.
Both units carry the 82305 part number but the FJ has an 01 suffix and the V-Max a 11 suffix.
Wasn't the V-Max a 90 deg V4 engine?  If so, the timing could/should be right, especially for a "wasted spark" ignition system like the FJ uses (this is where each coil fires 2 cylinders, one on compression and the other on exhaust stroke).

I take no responsibility for any damage you may cause to your engine by trying this swap.

Cheers,
Arnie

andyb

Rev limit and advance curve may be wrong.  Overall timing could be wrong (but shouldn't be, that's triggered elsewhere).

If memory serves, internally a whole lot of the units were the same, but the CDI/TDI don't always interchange between types.  Was reading about this awhile back, and it seems that yamaha used basically one model of box, but internally the values were set by using either different components in a couple places and/or cutting certain traces.

So if you really know what you're doing, it wouldn't be too hard to fake it and use say, an XS1100's unit, but a plug and play solution is getting the correct box only, nothing else is a given.

The Vmax wasn't a 90 degree engine.  70, I think, so it won't use the same trigger spot to fire everything the way the FJ (or XS, which is also a I4 wasted spark system iirc) does.

Mavrix

Thanks guys for the heads up! Almost purchase the CDI but decided not to.. Yup i just forgot the V-max is a V-type engine.. thats "V" letter is obvious.. haha silly me!

Regarding i have the 1200 engine now, i guess the XJR1200 CDI could be plug and play also is it? Because the XJR are using the same engine configuration with the old FJ is it? hmm..   :scratch_one-s_head:

Hi there

if you are using the 93 engine & carbs You may need to change the carb float valves re gravity v's pump fuel system.... also...I'm not sure...others will know ...but I think the engine mounts and ignition plate/rotor may also be different....

Hope this helps :drinks:

Stay rubber side down.

fj1289

In order to use the XJR CDI, pretty sure you'll also need to change the pickups - the early motors used a different pickup arrangement (1 versus 2 pulses per crank revolution) than the later engines.

I think you'll be able to find information on that by searching the forums or looking in the files section.

Good luck!

Mavrix

@fj1289
@flips

Thanks for the tips.. hopping to get the CDI soon, apparently my fren are going for a trip to Japan next month.. already ask him to search some scrap FJ's there.. hope he can find one and get it back to my hometown.. its costly of course, but i guess better then nothing! hehe

One more thing, the new engine (not so new i mean its from a scrapyard) do i have to strip it down? Its because the engine condition is still in looks factory to me, no indications it has been overhauled previously.. is it better to strip it? I just plan to leave it that way, just drain the old EO and flush it with a new one, running it for a mile or two then drain it again to fill a new EO again..
