Hey Gang,
My 86 has "wont start after long run issue". Have to wait for it to cool down before I can restart. In my case cracking the starter did not help. I understand one possible fix it to remove starter and clean up mounting surfaces, which may have corrosion build up after 25 years, inhibiting the negative power circuit. Following Clymer manual, I removed the mounting bolts and disconnected the positive power lead, then jiggled, wiggled, pulled and even pried a little (talking about the starter here). But could not get the starter free. I finally gave up and put things back together. It was loose enough to see that the surfaces appeared OK. But if the problem persist, it probably will, I will have to remove the starter for repair or replacement. Am I missing a step? Any pointers on getting it outta there is appreciated.
Hope you all are well,
Mike

Cleaning the armature (with a fine grit emery cloth) and cutting the mica insulation (broken hacksaw blade) so it's a few thousandths (.020" - .060") lower than the copper sections is the best way to fix these, since you're pulling the starter anyways.... cracking the throttle is a short term keep-her-running work-around.

Cool. I hope to play with this, this week end. I need to run up to Vegas tomarrow (in car). Do you think I will need jacket?

Did you mean "cracking the [gas cap] did not help"? If not you may want to try that, depending on what the actual symptoms are.  Does it actually spin noticeably slower when hot? THAT may indeed be the starter, if not, pop the gas cap open and try again.

Guessing you've ruled this out but it usually does not hurt to state the obvious, in the event it has not occurred to you.

You could have also meant "cracking the [throttle]..." in which case the above may still be true.
