Hi:

Got the descriptions of the the plastic part that protects the swing arm from getting sawed apart by the drive chain from online sources and the Clymer manual for my '85 FJ.

If you can still get the part, it's in excess of $100!

I have the back end of my bike off of the bike for maintenance and re-painting. When I went to remove the "chain slipper", one of the mounting tabs for it broke off. Upon inspection, it looks like that area of the guard was embrittled by its exposure to the battery's juices running over it when it boiled over on the previous owner.

Has anyone run across this already? If they did, how did you fix it, or did you somehow mount something else on the swingarm to protect it from getting sawed apart by the drive chain?

I think that I may be able to salvage the guard by somehow safety-wiring (new art to me, I just bought a Harbor Freight tool for doing it) it back on.

I thought that I'd toss out my problem to others here, to see what they've done for this area. For a plastic part that costs so much, I figure that someone's found a workaround or fix for it.

Thanks in advance for the feedback and help.

A small chunk of Delrin or comparable plastic wouldn't be real difficult to make work.

Andy:

I know Delrin is good stuff. I suppose that I could use my Dremel, hack saw, and drill to fashion a part up.

Thanks.

Delrin is great stuff. I machine parts out of it at work, but I think polypropelyne or UHMW would work better for that application. It is not as brittle and will stand up to just about anything including battery acid.
