Umm okay I have looked - probably not well enough at earlier posts and didnt see anything...

My problem - well not really a problem but just an irritation really are the lights you find in the "dashboard" such as the fuel, oil, neutral and left/right indicators - my problem is not all these lights work, namely: the left indicator light, the high beam light to be exact..

First off, what potential things are wrong with them?

Can I fix them?

How can i Fix them?

I ride an 88fj1100(yes apparently its an 88 fj1100) if that helps. All the other lights work perfectly.  Like I said its not really a problem but it is annoying........

Well, some of the 23 year old bulbs are probably burned out.

Pull the instrument pod and replace them.

Use 'LL' type bulbs, or you will likely be doing it again soon.

I am guessing you mean long life bulbs..

to get to the instrument pod would I have to disassemble the front ferring?

Nope, just take out the fuel tank, inner fairing panels, the instrument surround, then you should see 1 bolt on the left and 1 on the right side of the instrument panel. I would just change out all the bulbs while you are in there, IIRC there are 11 of them. Just did all of mine about 2 months ago.

They may call it an 88 (on your paperwork) but there is no way Yamaha built that bike in 88

Looks like an '85 in the picture.

But the fairing is busted where the side scoop should be.  Definitely an '85 lower fairing.

Yeah there has been some debate over what year model my bike actually is in an other topic on the forum, apparently some guy mentioned the 1100 was manufactured in 86 to 89 in certain parts of the globe. (i come from South Africa - very behind with bikes) but I have searched wikipedia and other such sites and could not find any such comments other than the 1100 was manufactured universally from 84 to 86.

I too believe it is an 85 although some think an 84..

End conclusion - it is an FJ - so reardless of the year make it is a beautiful machine with a shitload of potential!

Anyway, I will search for the long life bulbs and start with the 1s that arent working for now and get the rest next week, glad toknow i dont have to take everything apart although its starting to become the general norm that if you want to fix anything on the FJ you will have to start by taking the seat and tank off...

Take a look at the front of the cylinder block just below the head gasket. In the center at the cam chain kickout boss just above the two small nuts.

The castings for each read:

1100cc = 1097cm3
1200cc = 1188cm3

That will answer the question on which engine/model you have.

The year/model makes a difference for how the fairing comes off.  If it is an '84/'85, then the whole fairing will need to come off to get the dash panel out and change bulbs.

That was the reason for determining exactly what year you have.

There was several updates done to the FJ for the 86 model (1200) I find it hard to believe that they would keep manufacturing an older version with out the updates.

For instance the 1100's have a 2 bolt alternator. By the end of 85 they realized this was a problem so they changed the cases and alternator to have 3 bolts.

Once they start producing the new updated cases there is no way they are going to keep manufacturing the old model, they don't build a new warehouse for every new model year.

So the only theory I am willing to believe is the 1100's were built in 84 and 85, (starting late 83 till late 85) perhaps they had left overs that they shipped to small market countries and sold them as new even though they were a year or two old at the time.

I too believe that is the case, as I have stated South Africa is very behind with things especially bikes. according to my papers its an 88 reg bike but was only first purchased or atleast properly registered in 2003. Sounds fishy to me though. I think the bike is definitely an 85 but I will check what randy said to make double sure..

Although hearing that my bike is the retard model since it only has 2 bolts makes me feel a lil sad about it :cray:

Also with comments of there being a 17 digit VIN number - i have searched and found nothing on the bike anywhere, even the papers. I found out that it had engine work done and this was where the number was lost - apparently :pardon:

Took a look and it says 1100cc = 1097cm3 So its definitley an 1100

Both the frame and engine came with a VIN.
