1314 Big bore kit

Hey guys/gals,

I'm thinking of upgrading the donk on my 84 FJ11 to put a 1314 big bore kit thru it. My questions are, are there overheating problems involved with this, if so, how do I eliminate this, second, is there anything else that should/could be done to the engine (while I've got it apart) to enhance the performance, and third, would my gearbox handle this? Any info or previous experience on this matter would be welcomed.

Many thanks.

Bazil-

For sure, if not already done, you'd want to under-cut 2nd gear.

You'll need some improvement in the stock clutch also, or you'll just blow through it.

As far as heat on a bigger bore, the usual rules would apply.  Run it a little on the rich side, don't run it on crap gas, don't idle for any length of time without moving in traffic.

Undercutting second is probably a good idea.

As far as other things that can be done, how much money do you have?  With enough money an awful lot is possible..

Hi Basil,

I looked into doing this a couple of years ago, according to the Wiseco web site 1219cc is the largest kit now for the 1097cc block. For the 1314 kit "Cylinder sleeving required, Crankcase cleanup req, FJ1100 must use FJ1200 cylinder block". However, Bob Shammas had a great write up here:

Realistically it is very cost preventative here in Aus. You may get more "bang for buck" by changing the cams and some trick headwork, ignition & carb jetting etc.. I was getting a reliable 137RWHP from my FJ1100 without the need for a bigbore kit. But then again you can't beat the extra torque a big bore kit would give you.

How much are you looking to spend?

Awhile back, I was looking at rebuilding the engine in my 85 1100. It turned out it was cheaper to buy a 1340 complete that to rebuild the 1100 from one of the guys that do the sprint cars. I'll see if I can dig up the email with his info in it.

It's not really a cost thing, it's more a keeping up with my mates thing! Problem is it's got the looks, just not the go. I am used to riding my GSXR750 Slingshot (with an 1100 sidecar engine in it) gobs of torque! Am prepaired to spend in the region of AU$5000, hoping for something around the 150-160 ponies, but am more interested in the torque factor. Sounds like second gear will defiantly have to be under cut, and a heavier clutch would be in order.

Hi Basil,

If it's not a "cost" thing, do what Frank M did and order a brand new 1250cc crate motor, pull it down, add some 1340cc Ross pistons, lightened crank, headwork, cams etc. and have a 180+/-HP "Brutus" motor that will do more than have you keeping up with your friends, but leave them with their jaws on the ground in absolute disbelief. For not much more than you think you could have a brand new motor shipped from the US as a ready to go weapon.

Then just pull the standard 1097cc FJ1100 donk out & store in in the shed.

Thanks for your help TeeCee,

I dont suppose you have any details of who to contact in the states or where I could get some info from for the 1250 option?

Hi Basil,

Either Frank M. or Steve C. can give you the details. IIRC they are both at the Boone Rally so will be offline for a few days. I'm sure they will respond once they read the thread.

Mate it's the way to go, both Frank & Steve had their big bore motors built by legend race engine builders who really know their stuff. This way you'll have an ultra tuned 1340cc brand new motor putting out 170HP+ shipped to your door. :yahoo:

Frank's engine, "Brutus", was built by Hank Scott http://www.hankscottracing.com/ . He used a new XJR1300 and tricked it out... I don't recall who did Steve's.

IIRC, Andy York/Ken did Frank M's and Hank Scott did Steve C's.

To quote Frank M:

" Andy Y did the bottom end and Ken the mad scientist did the headwork... Ken has built many many FJ motors but only a dozen or so motors like this one..... He named this one Brutus and said it had every go fast trick he knows and should be good for 200hp at the crank! ... whether Brutus will live up to his makers expectations?.... Well i dont know yet but so far indications are good..... and i am impressed..... AND i have a shite eating grin i cant wipe off my face!"
