It's hard to shift now and when idling and putting into first gear with clutch engaged bike still moves forward.  Why?

Dan Filetti

Knowing nothing more than the scant information your post provides, I'm guessing it's one of two things 1) The slave seal has failed and it need to be serviced, or 2) there is air in the line, that needs to be bled out.

Did you just 'adjust' [try to adjust] the clutch and have these symptoms, or are you thinking you need to? (you likely do given what you've said.)

Another point, if the problem is air in the line, and you have done nothing to it, then the slave failure is still a possible, likely in fact, cause of this.  The clutch slave is a known failure point on the FJ.  Fortunately, it's an easy fix.  To check the slave remove the three bolts holding it on look for any sign of wetness on the back of the slave.  Peeling paint around the area of the slave is a tell tell sign as well.  Removing the slave's three bolts will not allow air in/ will not require re-bleeding.

If there is wetness, you will need a rebuild kit, Randy sell them, and an hour in the garage, to get yourself going again.

Good luck, let us know what you find.

Sounds like your clutch is not releasing fully.  You may have a leak of fluid at the slave cylinder (common) or the master (less common).  If either of these is the cause you'll have to rebuild the offending part.  It may also only be a small air bubble in the system that you'll need to bleed out.  Search the files for "clutch bleeding"

Will it be ok to ride with it like this until I get the rebuild kit?  Or is that a bad idea?

fj11.5

unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

could be stuck plates too.... try rocking the bike back and forth in gear (engine off /clutch pulled in) and see if it loosens up.

not unheard of for a clutch slave cylinder to become gunked up and fail from years of clutch fluid neglect either.

this may apply to your situation:  was the fj on its side stand and somebody squeezed the clutch lever a few times? this will cause air to enter the line if fluid is not at optimum level in site glass.  If you have kids or neighbors kids this is a common problem.

pump it rapidly and see if builds up pressure  , if it does ride it carefully .

My slave cylinder crapped out on me once in the middle of a ride and while it would shift once moving , every time I approached a stop sign I pumped the lever so I had enough pressure to take off again in 1st gear.

It might also be worth simply checking the bolts around your sprocket cover and slave to see if they are tight. If the slave isn't pulled right in by those bolts it's not going to push the push rod in far enough to release all the pressure off the clutch spring, hence clutch not fully disengaging.

It's probably air somewhere though.

As far as riding it goes, you can ride it all you like but it's going to be a bitch to get into neutral and you will wear out clutch plates and steels if you dont fix it soon.
Life's pretty straight without twisties.
