Starts,revs,and idles ,but

Havnt taken her out yet, but iding at about 1050rpm, and popping out the exaust from one of the carbs, ,would the mixture screws being slightly off maybe cause this, or maybe a good ride to clear her head :)

go for a ride and run some good fuel thru it .

idle mix is 2.5 turns for starters and adj from there.

Thanks mate, set her at 2.5  out, now just need to wait for the rain to bugger off for awhile :)

Popping from the pipe seems to be fixed, had done the ignition plate advance mod, may have gone a mm to far, as i moved the plate a fraction and has stopped popping, advanced too far ?

Re,synched carbs and set "mixture" screws to 3.5 turns out, revs clean and comes back to idle ok, also performed flapectomy even though cap still whistled when the tank was warm,
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

the comes back to idle ok , does it hang up on the way back or drop below idle and come up?

Comes back to idle, no hang up, or dropping, best she,s ever been, as ive had it do both before,

Found the intermitant rev problem, either the power wire to the relay unit behind the fairing left side ( 84 1100 )  or the connector block , as i have a rew of the relay units and the prob is still there, before taking the fairing off would a jumper wire from the ignition switch work till i can rip out the dodgy wire

Depends on if it's shorting on something or simply half broken.  A jumper doesn't fix a short, but it'd work okay to bypass a broken section.

Meh, take it off and do it properly.  Last thing you want is a big slap of power (or lack thereof) midcorner or something.

The relay had a couple of dodgy plugs that i cleaned and soldered up, and after taking the fairing off and wiggling wires from the relay and using the test light, the relay clicking on and off i found the problem, the po had used spade clips to connect to a standard plug, and taped it all together, if it wasnt for the MASKING TAPE peaking out under the electrical tape id still be looking . . pluged it in relay stayed on, will start it tomorow and see if its fixed, maybe unplug the dodgy wire when its going just to see if it stops , thanks for the input mate

I have somewhat the same problem (my carbs need to be boiled out and rebuilt). When my idle air screws are 2.5 turns out it "pops" and at 3.5 turns out most of it go's away. It still runs a bit ragged up to 2500 rpm then hang on. I assume it's the carbs because the #2 carb adjusts with the idle air 1, 3, and 4 don't respond except when all the way in about killing the engine.
At any rate the popping or light back firing on mine go's away with the idle air screw out to 3.5 turns (1990 FJ). It stills runs a bit ragged but but no popping. Saving my $$ for 4 complete rebuild kits..... Hoping to live with it until the end of riding season, carb rebuild for a winter project.

Mine pops a little, but what it was doing was shooting a 2ft flame out the pipe, ,problem was due to a wire being pulled out of a connector and just making contact, was the main power wire as when i took it away from the connector all power went , had been messed with by a po as ive had effie 7yrs and the cut off relay had played up, well thats what i thougt it had been , all this time , have tried to find the fault before ,the relay would click on and off when wires were moved., i must have loosend the plug doing the coil mod
