Kill switch proplem?

Was going on a ride the other day and went to the meet point with some other riders and when I went to restart the bike nothing!  It was off for about 15 minutes.  I noticed that the run/off button was inadvertantly turned off so I switched it back on and still nothing.  I jumped out the kick stand switch, started to take the run button appart and heard the fuel pump kick in.  It happened again later that day and same thing, started to take it appart and pump kicked in and started right up.  Now I have taken the switch all the way appart, cleaned it up, and now it seems to be working.  Am I in the ballpark on this?  Is this a common problem?  Kind of lost a little "trust" for the faithful FJ and am looking at some lengthy rides in the near future so want to know what everyone thinks on this.  Don't want to be in booneyland somewhere and have to wonder if she's going to start or not.  Thanks for any input.

Seems to me, to avoid getting stuck in booneyland, all you need to do is carry the tools to start taking the switch apart.... :)

I've read here where the start button needs to be periodically serviced but for whatever reason, I not seen the kill button fail yet.  You could be the first, (that I've seen anyway).

You have said you have 'started' to take it apart 2X...  But have you 'finished'?  That is, taken it all the way apart, cleaned all the contacts and lubricated everthing machanical, and a bit of dialectric greese on the contact pieces?  ...and while you're there, obviously, you should be looking for any broken/ worn wires etc...

It does sound like an electrical issue, anyway.  Worst case scenario, can you try 'jumping the switch' like you did the side-stand switch??

Keep at it, you'll find it.

Well we did take it appart and reassemble it as well with proper cleaning and lube, however after seeing some of the starter switch problems, I'm going to take it back appart as well as the starter switch and clean n lube it as well.  All wires look good and sturdy.  Bike has been garage kept all it's life and nothing looks or feels close to rotten.  Oh and yes, I do carry some tools in order to fix what I can on the road, however like most I'm sure, don't really dig taking things appart out there.  I'm just thinking that while taking the run switch appart, the two prior times while on the ride,  I could have rattled the starter switch back where it needed to be so I'm off to the garage again.  Just trying to get my trust back with a 6-7 hundred miler tomorrow.  Have a "little" 2K in July and a possible Utah to East coast in the fall.  :scratch_one-s_head:

the run switch can get funky just like the start switch.  it has happened to me.

There you go, learn something new every day.  That said, it's can't be a common failure point, it simply does not come up in discussion.
