Carb setting/sync

Okay so Im looking to sync my carbs on my FJ1100, and have a few questions.

I have the aftermarket vance and hines exhaust and KN airfilters. The bike is very choppy and grumbly when taking off (wants to die), but will idle and start up like a clock, and after it gets going, runs great(but backfires like a mad man). Which has lead me to try and sync the carbs.

First, I was wondering if anyone knows what the stock setting for the air screws are (in turns out)?

and second, when I am hooking up the synchronizer where do I hook up the hoses too? Is there an attachment that I need or do they plug into a little knob thingy?

First:  What does the stock setting for the idle mix screws matter to you, having aftermarket intake and exhaust bits?  Not to be rude, but it's kinda not relevant to your setup.  I'd suggest trying around 2.5-3.5 turns out.

When you say choppy when taking off, you mean when accellerating from a stop at low revs?  If so, check into the float height to start.

To connect a synch gauge, you'll need to connect to the little spigots that protrude up from the intake rubbers, between the carb and the head.

Pilot jet(s) are plugged, IMO

Yes that is what I mean by choppy.

I was just wondering because the screws are all screwed up (no pun intended). And I just wanted a reference for a place to start. After I attempt to sync the carbs and it fails to work still, then I will check the floats.

Thanks for the help though I appreciate it  :good2:

As far as the carbs being clean or clogged I cant tell you how many times I have been through them and cleaned them in the past year so I highly doubt that it is an issue with something being clogged.

If you mean the one on this website, I was unable to find it/don't have the time to look through all the carb posts to find it. If there is anyway you are able to find it could you please post a link

Much appreciated

UPDATE:

After a glorious failed attempt at trying to sync the carbs, I still managed to get the bike running better. The fish tubing I used was lacking and practically melted when I hooked everything up to my homemade sync.

Basically all I did was turn the screws out 3.5 turns and pretty much got rid of all the back firing that was occurring. As well as the throttle response when taking off from a dead stop. It doesn't want to die as much/ aint as choppy, and is actually tolerable now.

Half way down the page is a pic of the carb sync device I made. I think it's easier to use as you have nearly no chance of sucking anything into your engine so you can safely use water to get a very precise balance. You cant see it from the pics but there are some restrictors in the carb end of the tubes, I used superglue nozzles stuffed in the tube to calm the pulsing.
All you do is hook it up and when the level of the water stops transfering you have ballance.

Cheers, Ben.
