Okay was it the trick to get them to stay and do I need them?  i pulled them off to replace the pads and now I can not figure out how to make them clip back in so that they stay on.

My opinion is that they are an appearance item.
However, to put them back on clip the inner side first and then snap the outer edge down.

Purely for looks, I eventually left them off. I like being able to glance down and see how much pad I've got left....

+1 The R1 calipers don't even have them to begin with.
