hello to you all...i have recently purchased a 1984 1100 for the amount of a shotgun :good:. it has 34.xxx miles on the clock and seems to be well cared for :good2:. I'm new to the world of street riding, let alone the fj world. this is my first street machine and i have to admit that i am hooked. i love this bike and hope to enjoy future ride and rally's with all of you.     that being said, i took the young lady out on a date yesterday and noticed it doesn't hold an idle to well if at all. idles about 600-800 rpm when warm. sometimes it even dies if i don't put a little gas in her throat at a light. same at a cold start. i haven't much wrenchtime on these amazing machines but lots on everyday vehicles per say, and wonder if turning up the idle a bit might just help. I am planning on doing a tune up on her this weekend( oil, plugs, air filter exc...). I'm feeling it probably needs a good carb clean ans sync as i have no clue on the maintenance history nor upgrades on this bike but plan to thoroughly involve myself in this area. BTW i live in Sacramento,ca. and really love this forum.  i hope to enjoy her for years to come so any advice would really help out alot. i have gain quite a bit of knowledge by reading previous posts and am dedicating my time to restoring it to better that new....anyways thank you all in advance for your time and will get pics up soon ...til then cheers :drinks:

That's why it's adjustable.  Turn it up.  The screw is located under the carbs and you'll need either smallish hands or a longish screwdriver to turn it.  Remember that you want to set it with everything at full temp.

Like Andy says, get it up to full operational temp, then try 1100 RPM idle.
That's whats where I run mine and seems good to me.

Remember these air cooled lumps are cold blooded bastards and will need a few minutes with the choke out so they will stay running on their own, just remember to turn the front wheel to the side, (moving the rear of the front fender away from the heat of the exhaust) so you don't start to melt the fender, and get some air flowing past it so it's not over heating.

welcome to the group  :hi:

there are a few of us in sacramento.

get your idle up to at least 1000 and check your air box for mice.

there is a rally at the end of the month near redding and plenty of space for another fjer.

send me a pm if you want to get in on a ride.

we get together and tear through the foothills every now and then.

there is a local guy that has some fj1100 parts laying around.

Not close enough to help but we all endorse the OEM seals. Get the OEM seals and quality help to install them and you will be good for longer than after market seals...Koookaloooo.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

What part of Sac. are you in? One thing you can try with the seals (before you change them) is get a .002" feeler guage remove the dust cap and run the feeler between the leg and the seals. Maybe as simple as some bug goo on the leg and it was driven into the seal.

Nice thing is it's cheep.
