Penske Shock install

Seems the Penske 8983 is the rear shock of choice for upgrade from stock. Is this generally a bolt on replacement of stock? Meaning is there any machining or other relatively technical work required?  I looked a bit for a file that might instruct on this project to no avail. Some good pics of finished installs but did not find a "how to". Maybe it,s not warranted. When purchasing the shock is there more than one 8983? Is there more to specify? I'm thinking the hardest part will be the prying open of my wallet. Recomended supplier?
Appreciate the tips or reference to file I may have missed.

Pat, Lakers in  20 minutes. NEED THIS WIN!! (popcorn)

Penske is a bolt on except for where to mount the remote.

I have been aware that you are one the more valuable and appreciated resources here, but I see once again no one is perfect. LA baby

Mike, if you get a Penske before me I am gonna be really pissed! :diablo: (ok, not really) just gonna be really jealous cuz my ass end is bouncing like a Pogo stick. One Mod at a time, really sucks on a budget. Next time your are down for a Mod remove them damn thick block off plates and I will get them milled down for you. WCR, you gonna make it?

I should have that work done now. The wheels are removed waiting for the new rubber. Those things are fugly. I am still on the fence for the rally, leaning towards going. I have other family plans pending. Sounds like you are definite.
THIS IS YOUR FIRST RALLY ISNT IT?

YES! I cannot pass up this chance! I have met a few more members during the dreaded SoCal ride when K-Man had a high power slide from a mostly disrespectful Pinecone. I need to spend more time in the FJ riders fold with Marsh and Mike and SimiChrome(Pat?) and K-Man and some others I fail to recall at this mentally reduced time. I have purchased ramps and tie downs to tote my bike in the back of my truck to WCR. I am within inches of having my GSXR rear wheel mod for this venture. I will be stoked to just be there and enjoy the brother hood of fellow bike riders that like the wind and the freedom of bikes and Koookaloooo! I have been dying for the past 6 or years to make a rally, I am done with wishes.....See ya there mates...

My shock is shot also.  Riding 2 up with the wife is an adventure.  Any word on the group buy of these Penskes?  Man, other than the blue dots up front, this is a mod I need done.

Hey Slowoldguy, so where did you mount the remote. Been looking for pics everywhere, spent half the weekend trying different spots, still a bit flummoxed where to put the damn remote.  :dash1: :wacko3: :flag_of_truce: But OMG, that shock looks bewtiful !!   :good2:

Here is my '84 with the reservoir located on the left side. I can reach down and adjust my compression while riding. When ordering specify a 11" long hose. Cheers

I never measured mine, but it could use a couple more inches.

I hear that from many people Travis.  Don't feel bad.

any ideas where to get the Penske shock in Australia?
I really (need) want one... to adjust seat hieght and because I ride usually two up with the missus

Pat Conlon

Google "Penske shock Australia" and like magic, about a half dozen listings appear....

Or you could e-mail Randy @ RPM and see if he can buy you a shock, and then send it to you....http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=69.0

Ive tried the Google trick and yes you get a LOT of listings, but there really is no way to figure who is good to deal with

I didnt think Randy did that... but I can ask...

shock and bigger oil cooler... sigh

Why don't you go direct to Penske in Reading PA (US) and have them send it to you?
Why do you want to add GST and mega profits to an Aussie importer/distributor or several layers of Aussie distribution?
