I've just done a search on the subject but unable to find any info.
Has anyone on here used a set of oversize rings that they have filed down to standard size to be used in the engine?
The reason i ask is that i'm doing just that to a set of 2nd oversize 1100 rings. I got them cheap, brand new for $36 posted from South Africa, saving myself about just over £200GBP.
Has anyone had any problems doing this and would anyone like a few photo's putting up?
A lot of the guys on the XS1100 forums do it, i haven't yet as my XS's are alright, but it seems you can get a lot of the oversize rings, be it 1st or 2nd, a lot cheaper than standard sizes. I think that they are new old stock that have been bought by suppliers then never got round to selling.

2 oversize, i really dont know, but 1 oversize you can use, remember good oils and drive softly about 3000 km.

Well the XS guys say 1st oversize is best, but 2nd oversize can be used.
I'll let everyone know the outcome in fair time, but this project i've set the time limit to June 2012 when i'll be 50.
They slide in the bores nice enough so i can't see there being a real problem.

I can tell you, I would not do it no matter which oversize you choose; now with that said...

Piston rings are made to fit a specific bore and if they are a performance ring left long to allow the fitment of the ring within the specified bore. If you use an oversize ring in a smaller bore the ring will not be "round" within the bore and will not seal properly.

Now, if you have a worn cylinder and can determine the +1 ring is now the right size and you decide to use that on the stock piston, that is now to small for the bore, the ring face will become rounded very quickly as the thrust of the piston cannot be controlled by the excessive clearance within the bore.

So, the best thing to do is measure what you have, machine if needed and installed the proper parts.
