I just checked with my local Yammy dealer and he told me a factory key is not availible.

Does anyone have a source for a factory Yamaha key blank for my 1991 FJ1200?
The only key I have is one that looks like it came from a hardware store! LOL!

Thanks,
Leon

Leon.
Just got off the phone with Yamaha dealer and he has 4 in stock. These are the all steel Yamaha blank with no plastic cover on them. I think maybe the only way to get that would be to order a whole new ignition.
I am going to grab one as my spare next time I am in his neighborhood. You want me to grab you one?

That's the same thing I was told. Thanks Jake for checking for us, I wonder if that's a world wide thing.
I have a Yamaha key but just a steel key no plastic cover, something else to blame the PO for.

No, but thanks for the offer Jake.
My local locksmith can get generic blanks that will work.

I was just hoping to find an OE key.
My dealer also told me about buying the complete switch to get the key I'm looking for.
Not ready to spend $100s for a key! LOL!

Randy has these:

Pretty cheap price too!  It won't help you out with the gas cap - but I thought I'd point it out for those who haven't seen it.

Still doesn't resolve the issue of the key blank, but maybe the other two locks can be re-keyed to fit the new key.

My experience with the aftermarket locks is the cut of the key is totally different and would require you to change the tumblers on the gas cap and seat locks.  This may or may not be possible with the help of a locksmith.

Just my .0000001c worth.

Garth,
Thank you for the knowledge you have bestowed about the keys. After I read you post I went out and looked, they are indeed a different key blank and they will not interchange.

I have a buddy that owns a hardware store and I have given him my key blank to see if he can find one with the plastic top. I will keep you posted if I can get them or not.

Next time I'm at the bike shop I'll ask about OEM keys here in japan.
My GF threw mine down from our 4Th floor apartment... either I'm a bad catch or she's a bad throw because it's never been the same since.
If I can get a hold of the real deal I'll order the lot.

In follow up to my last post I have actually followed throught with something and found these...

Bit of a dodgy pic because I just took it at the shop but it does have YAMAHA inset on the head of the key.

This one matched up with my 89 key, I assume the keys are the same for all the years?

If anyones interested let me know and i'm sure we can sort something out. They were only about $20 USD and i'm sure postage wouldn't be much in an envelope.

Cheers, Ben.

I gave the code off my key & the year make model to my local Yamaha dealer. took a week & $32.

If you go to DennisKirk.com, they sell a new ignition with two new keys for $23 for the FJ1100. Bob's Cycle Supply in Little Canada, MN sells them for the same cost, special order though.
