Top Case?

I have an '85 FJ1100.

Am I too late to the game to get a top case (like a Givi) with the mounting hardware for my FJ?  I saw I missed out on Givi hardware in the for sale section.

Are there any other hard, lockable top case luggage options?

Does anyone know how to fabricate something that would work?

I'd really like to have some place to lock my stuff for light touring and commuting.

Thanks!

I think the UKFJOC still has pattern Givi rack mounting parts in their catalog.

Hepco becker still makes hard luggage and mounts for the FJ ..... although the racks are special order they can still be had.

I think the Hepco Becker style looks great on the FJ.

If you want to fit a Givi top case you have two Givi options.

a) The Wingrack. The FJ fitting kit is out of production so you need to be lucky on eBay or get a pattern one from the FJOC UK. This will also allow you to fit panniers.

b) The Monorack. This is still in production. The problem is that the fitting is not very strong - it uses the indicator mount. I've seen them fail. I strengthened mine with a steel strap around the frame tube.

You could also fit another carrier (ie Renntec) and attach a Givi top plate. Strength would be an issue if you intend to carry significant weight.

Of course that should be "eg Renntec"

Yep - I did the same thing!  To clarify for Mr. Fox: the Givi Monorack (for just carrying a top box) is actually pretty strong and well made.  There are two attachment points for each side of the motorcycle.  The front one is very strong.  Givi just messed up and made it so the rear attachment point attaches to the turn signal mounts.  They WILL snap off if you attach there - it is just a matter of time.  So skip that attachment alltogether and make yourself a new attachment by bending some steel around the rear subframe - clamp it together and drill a hole through it.  Problem solved!  You are also able to get the Givi rack rails to follow the lines of the bike this way which looks much nicer then the way it would be if you mounted to the turn signal mounts.

I found a neat little bracket on eBay made by Shad. I don't now if they still make for the FJ or not. If you do a search you might come up with something.

Simple and sound installation. I got a small trunk off eBay for light touring and commuting. I throw on some soft saddle bags if I need to carry more. More pics in my gallery.

Thanks for all the info and pictures!

Marsh:  Would it be possible to see a few pictures of how you mounted the rack?

DD:  Looks good.  That's the set up I'm trying to get, and the prices seem less expensive too.

So does anyone have any sources to purchase from that aren't in the UK?  That's all I can find  :dash2:

Thanks again!

I seem to recall that Sears and JC Whitney both sell a couple of top cases that are usable.  They come with a mounting plate that you'll have to secure to a rack of some type on your FJ, but they are cheap.  Worth a look.

I'm using a NonFango topcase (and mount plate) that I've fixed to a Ventura rack mount system and to the grab handles on my '91.  Very solid mounting.

Cheers,

I have both... broke the tooth off the latch plate on the JCW bag, which was a direct fit to my Givi top plate.

The Sears bag I got last year had an improved latch plate, but required some slight modding to fit the Givi top plate, but works very well.  It's not the quality of the Givi case, but bang for the buck factor is pretty high.  IIRC, the Sears bag was $52.

If you want to make your own you can get the Givi parts here.

Then you can make your own anyway that you want to. I intend to replace my existing wing rack with my own. I feel that I can make it lighter and a LOT more narrower

I just got a top case and mount from GIVI for our 1990 FJ. The mount may have been changed, it says it is for the 1100 & 1200. There are 2 L brackets on each side and they bolt directly to the tail frame. I have the integrated tail light from RPM so turn signals have been removed. It did take a little tweaking to get it straight. I believe the L brackets may need some upgrading down the road so I am keeping a close eye on them. We got the V46 case and don't believe them when they say you can put two full face helmets in there. We have Shoei RF1100 lids and only one fits and it is tight. $575 for the whole setup delivered direct from GIVI east coast distribution center, they did not charge us shipping. I feel it is a good looking setup and the mount alone is not huge. It is on Wife's bike without side bags and looks good with or with out top case IMO.
