hey guys , my mirror has started to rattle on my 86 fj.

wasn't there a fix for this ? like shooting expanding foam into it or something like that? :unknown:

perhaps someone who has actually done this repair can post up with some first hand experience.

don't wanna ruin it.

thanks

Yep, IIRC it was George who told his story about drilling a hole in the bottom of the mirror then sticking the hose from a can of expandable foam into the cavity and filling the shit out of it. It seemed that the hole plugged up while the foam continued to expand, blowing out the glass.....duh.
I had to laugh, visualizing good 'ole George popping out his mirror...It should have been on uTube.
Therefore, If you do use foam, use very very little......

I used a flexable silicone sealent on my '84's mirror. Turn it upside down and fill it from the bottom. Let it cure for a couple of days while upside down.

Arrggg! (not a Pirate by profession) My 86' RHS mirror has that dreaded death rattle.... I drilled a hole in the bottom and filled it with expanding foam..The silicone method is my next choice as the foam worked for a few weeks. I am working on an adapter to make the CBR mirrors work on the 86/87 years. I have purchased a set today and when they come in I can finish my design to lean the mirrors over enough to fit the 86/87 years. Stay tuned, I will share my findings.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Since then, I've changed my oem '84 mirrors (they looked like Mickey Mouse ears) and put on some sexy Italian Rizoma mirrors. Very bitchen.
Imagine these in black...

Hey Pat,

Glad to see you hopped on board the Rizoma train!  Definitely worth the extra scratch in my opinion.

Mark, I had a rattle on one of my 90 mirrors and I fixed it by putting some Sillycone sorry silicone around the mirror and in the edge.   I found the rattle was only on one side;  the inner side -- when it rattled at idle I just put my finger around the edge until the noise stopped... every time it was on the inside part.  So I pushed the silicone bead on that edge and on the mirror and pushed it in the between the two surfaces as best that I could then cleaned up all the excess.

The excess silicone cleaned up easily and the rattle at idle was gone.

The 86 mirror has two heavy weights attached to the mirror back...if they are making the rattle then my above solution will not work but my rattle was the mirror itself vibrating at the edge and so the sillycone worked well......

ps use clear silicone obviously..

yeah thats what i got , an edge rattle that goes away if you touch the edges of the mirror.

I may try that fix of yours.

Mark,
I got in there with a big drill and bust the weights out of the mirrors. This cures the rattle 100 percent. To patch the holes I used electrical tape and nobody ever noticed for the years this fix lasted. Finally though I weakened and bought some spanky reconditioned ones off George B. They improve the looks no end.

Can someone post links to a good set of mirrors for an 89?  I have a weight rattling in one of mine and it drives me crazy.  I might pull it off and try to fill it but some sexier mirrors might be more fun.

Paddy's been bragging on his new Rizoma mirrors.....  Don't know where he got them, though, and I couldn't see any adapters for 86-87 or 88-90 FJs on the Rizoma website. Anyone know if the footprint is the same as 91-up?

so I have this habit of hanging my helmet and jacket on the mirror when I am out riding and after a bit of riding and some rest stops the rattle is gone again.   :shok:

I will see if it comes back and check out Pat's sexy mirrors at the rally.
