this is my first post on here so be gentle with me :empathy3:. the bike has been of the road for a long time and it's about time it got back out there. when i turn the key i get lights on the dash but when i press the start buttom i don't even get a click from the relay but the lights on the dash do go a little bit brighter. it has a new battery and starter relay and have cleaned all the connectors. so what do you lot think is it some sort of cut off problem or could it be an earthing problem ( the frame as been powder coated )

could be a few things...... clutch switch, neutral switch, sidestand switch or the starter button.

if you have the clutch in, bike in gear with the sidestand down the bike will not crank.

if you have the clutch in, bike in gear with the side stand up and the clutch or sidestand switch is malfunctioning the bike will not start.

. there is a pair of wires under the clutch master and a pair of wires that connect to the sidestand switch.

if you jump the two wires at each switch together you have defeated the safety system and the bike should start.

one other thing is the actual start button is malfunctioning.... try wiggling the starter button while trying to start the bike.

does the headlight come on with the ignition ? does it go off when you press the starter button ?

KOokaloo!

After checking the side stand switches etc, and no result, could be the starter button wiring. The Starter button wiring has a reputation for this, you said you cleaned the connectors, did you unplug any connectors on the main wiring loom? There is often a dry joint in this area, check the connectors are tightly closed again. If all seems good, the best way to check is to pop open the seat, and carefully unplug the small blue wire coming out of the starter relay. With the ignition on, earth the wire coming out of the relay on the frame and the starter should turn over.If it does, you should check the circuit continuity with a multimeter between the connector block from the handlebar wiring where it connects to the main wiring loom and the connector where it connects to your starter relay. Before you reconnect the starter relay.Press the starter button to close the circuit & you should get a reading.(a blue  & white wire). Good Luck.

i have tested all the buttons and whitches and all are working ok. when i earth the wire coming out of the starter relay on the frame nothing happens. i was thinking it could be the starter relay but it is a new one but that doesn't mean it's not funked :ireful: could it just be a brand new relay that's not working :dash1:

You say your frame is powder coated, try earthing the blue wire  on a real good earth point, if you did that and you are not getting a starter turn over or a clicking sound, could well be a dud relay. If you are feeling a bit more savage, bridge a screwdriver between the 2 main terminals on the starter relay, basically achieves the same as earthing the blue & white wire. if it clicks, you know its good, but it means you have to look towards the starter motor. Hope this helps, I found all this out the hard way after unplugging 20year old wiring looms too, so you have my understanding.

just tryed the screwdriver trick and the relay doesn't click but it does turn the starter motor

The starter relay won't click by shorting the 2 main terminals. All this does, is bypass the relay switching circuit. Disconnect the 2 switching wires at the relay and connect 1 to the positive side of your battery and touch to other wire to the negative side. If it makes a clicking sound it's working.  Regards, Pete.
