Hey I am trying to restore an 86 fj1200 that I bought for 300 bucks. This bike has been sitting forever and has lots of corrosion. Used contact cleaner and cleaned up every connector possible. Checked the pickup coil resistance and its good. Checked the fuses, the run switch, and the coils are good too. Im thinking its the ignitor unit since its the only thing I cant really test, so i ordered one off ebay. I just need some other suggestions other people can think of. The starter also works so the safety switches arent acting up either. When I turn the run switch on and off it sparks once as I do it. Is it somthing dumb like the gas tank has to be plugged in? Any posts or ideas will be helpful thanks

Mark Olson

try removing and cleaning the contacts inside your run switch , common problem with the fj.
do you have 12v to the coils?
there is also a side stand switch and a clutch switch that can cause a no start.

gas tank does not need to be plugged in ,but you do need fuel to the carbs.

there is a introduction post area for new guys where you tell us a bit about yourself.
like what area you are in.

Well I haven't tried cleaning out the kill switch yet. Ill give that a go and see if I can get it to spark, and you are saying the carbs have to be mounted for spark to achieve? I didnt see a sensor to the carbs at all. I live in Florida so its humid as crap which is obvious why these electronics are giving me hell.

Got the killswitch and starter switch spotless and no cigar. Any more suggestions?

For anyone else who has this problem it ended up being the ignitor box. Thanks

Hey thanks for checking back in, glad to hear you found one, and it solved your problem. have you been riding it since?

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

I wish. Now i need a new petcock assembly cause mine was totally shot with corrosion. Cleaned the carbs and got it to idle though, so its on the road to recovery! Gonna post in the wanted forms as we speak.

Buying used: You might be waiting a while and miss out on some good riding. Your call.

You know that you can still buy a new Yamaha oem petcock:
$256 for the goofy '86 petcocks with the electric reserve (not recommended) or save $100 and buy the '84/85 petcock ($156) @ Woodys  http://www.woodysyamaha.com/
**Before** you buy from Woody's, check with Randy @RPM to see if he can beat Woody's price. I bet he can. For example Woody's has the '91+ petcock at $50 and Randy has the same '91 petcock for $26. http://www.rpmracingca.com/products.asp?cat=39
While Randy does not specifically show a '86 or '84/85 petcock listed on his website, this does not mean that he can't get them.

Hope you get on the road soon! Enjoy that bike!

Cheers!

I have an 86 Petcock if you need one -- I bought it off of ebay but did not use it as I repaired the one I have.  Just PM me if interested.  The 86 has the unusual type-- as Pat says it is an electric reserve ..... as near that I can figure out the system shuts the gas off electrically by cutting out the vacuum to the switch and then when you hit the reserve on switch it allows the vacuum to go to the switch and you get your gas back..... simulated reserve.

Unfortunately in this case, it does mean I can't get them. I tried on the last stock order I get from my supplier to add them onto the order, but they were specifically noted as a "non-power plant application" from Yamaha and the quantity was zeroed out on the order.

This is an infringement from my supplier, who can by "power plant parts" only on the "bike"market of Yamaha of America.

Believe me, I tried...
