The Mice ate my filter

I decided to have a look at the Air filter on my bike for the first time since I bought it, just to know how it looks like when asking for it at the store and this is what I found !!!

The bike was stored in a barn in Sweden when I bought it so I guess it was already eaten out,
then I drove it for approx 5000Km through Norway and to a ferry in Denmark that took me all the way to Iceland

Hopefully, that's all they ate.  At my old place, I kept the bike in a shed.  Had mice take up residence in the airbox one winter.  They gnawed away at the internal plastic ribs, but left the air filter alone.  Luckily, they didn't gnaw through, or start on wires.  After that I taped up the air intakes.

Yes I think this is all they ate as everything seems to function OK 
And I keep the bike now in a "mouse free" place (I hope!!)

You could fit a K&N filter element - I'd like to see the little critters try to eat that!

Thanks for the tip, do you mean an replacement for the OEM or to remove the filter housing and install four small filters instead?

do you have any idea of the cost involved?

Don't fit individual K&N's.... they fit badly and aren't made well.  Dual UNI's are the hot ticket for pods (check the FAQ for pn and more info).  A stock replacement K&N would work if your airbox is okay, though.

I was joking because the K&N replacement filter has a metal mesh protection so your furry friends would have trouble eating it.

However a K&N filter is a good idea because they are washable and therefore last forever. This is a good price:

If you were closer I'd lend you my cat.  Actually she's half cat half ninja.

Sometimes I'll see a telltale sign of a live mouse in the garage.  Soon afterwards I might see just a tail.  sometimes a head, maybe a little pile of mouse organs..

That may explain why the engine is runing rough

Hah.  I was given a GSX400X Impulse by a friend of mine.  It had sat in the shed for a few years, and the airbox was full of birseed and such from the rodents.  After I got it home, went through and cleaned it up as good as possible, cleaned the carbs 'cuz it was put away wet.  Pretty much started right up, but I could hear tinkle tinkle behind me.  Sunflower seed husks were blowing out the exhaust onto the driveway.....  Anyway, 12000Km's later, been a pretty good little bike.

Thanks for the link Stuart,
I think I will buy me one of those as the airbox itself is in good shape.

That also saves me the hassle of buying filters in bulk to save on shipping as these filters are hard to find here in my country of small population (only 340 000)
