FJ Resurrection - She's been sitting for a while!

Hey All!

I've got a 1984 FJ1100 with (I believe) just under 50,000kms on the clock.  It was my dad's bike and I'm currently collecting the bits to get her running well again.

Here's what I've come up against so far, and hopefully someone has some suggestions on how to proceed.

Its been sitting for a long time (3 years?) after coming back from the shop with a new tranny (2nd gear was borked).  I did manage to get it started up last year but I noticed that it got very hot very quickly, so shut it down. I changed the old (and very gloppy) oil for thinner-than-normal oil to see if that could clear out some of the gunk, and I have an aftermarket Lockhart oil pressure guage down near the rear brake lever and it wasn't showing any pressure.    Haven't gotten it running since however there is some very old gas still in the system and the plugs are fouled, so a good carb scrubbing, new fuel, and new plugs may clear that up.  The valve seals probably need replacing after sitting so long without any oil to keep them "moist".

But my issue is with the seemingly nonexistant oil pressure.  True, the guage might not be working, but does anyone have any recommendations on how to "clean" the sump of all the old oil residue?  I'm thinking the oil pickup to the pump may be plugged with gunk.  I've heard of oil additives that are supposed to clean things out, but I'm concerned about using it with the wet clutch.  I'm very hesitant to try and run the engine with questionable oiling.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

as far as i know there is not a place to get an oil pressure reading from anywhere near the rear brake lever.

are you sure its not an oil temp gauge stuck in the oil filler plug hole ?

how about some pictures ?

BTW welcome to the group!

I've never had mine off, but IIRC, it's not that big a job to remove it from the engine.  No guessing about what's in there that way.

Thanks! Glad to be here amongst fellow FJ lovers :)

I'll upload some tonight (at work right now).  The guage is a pressure guage, mounted near the rear lever but connected with a steel braid line to somewhere near the front of the right-side engine cover.  And I do remember it working once upon a time.  But like I said.. it might be broken.  I'm not sure how its connected, if somehow they tapped into the send line for the oil cooler or what.. but I'm not entirely sure either how they'd get a pressure reading where they seem to have put it.

Quite looking forward to getting it back on the road though, Supertrapp full stainless exhaust, K&N filter, Ohlins rear shock with remote hydraulic preload, repainted R1 Red with all the stock logos airbrushed in silver, in their original locations, under clearcoat.. my dad did some nice things with it!

Sounds nice!  Post up some pics and we'll help you get her back in tiptop shape!  I bet your valve seals are just fine - I've seen FJs resurrected with no valve seal problems after sitting longer than yours was.  Sounds like you are on the right track already.  Also, it is pretty easy to drop the oil pan and clean out any "gunk" - keep in mind that you'll likely need a new gasket to put it back on.

I agree with Marsh, It isn't too much work to take the oil pan off. Probably would give you a little peace of mind knowing it was clean too.
